Birchbank is a small campsite on a Lake District sheep farm, located on the fells between Coniston Water and the Duddon Estuary. The site has a small stream running through it which the children love to play in and is next to the fell, with footpaths and bridleways directly from the gate making it ideal for walking and cycling.

Great place to stay for walkers. We were out of season so very quiet, the facilities might not be up to it if the site is full though. Fantastic dark night skies, no noise or light pollution. Footpaths from the site in all directions although lots of sheep so the dog was on the lead quite a bit.

Brilliant! Lovely people, good long walks, near to Coniston, Ulverston, properly in the country, great to get away from it all! Farm superb, lovely views, two shower blocks, very clean. Sun shines in camping area, would go again.

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesSep 2022

Perfect for getting away from everything, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere even though Ulverston is about 7 miles away and there's some fantastic scenery around the site. We enjoyed seeing and hearing the sheep going about their day too. The facilities were adequate and well-maintained, and there's a lovely little stream through the middle of the site. Would definitely recommend and hopefully we'll be back some time.

Really lovely campsite in a beautiful setting. Facilities are great and pitches are spacious. In a good driving distance of Coniston. Incredible for the price too.

We had a great 2 nights camping in tent, a bit far from the lake and other shops, but if you go prepared you can have a great time.

Large Tent - Electric Grass PitchesAug 2022

In short, this was just what we were looking for! It's a small campsite in a very quiet rural area, it's on a working farm but it's literally in the middle of nowhere, which was perfect. The owners were lovely and very helpful when asking for information. It's got all the usual basic facilities for washing up, fridge/freezer, showers, sinks etc. The toilets and showers are unisex and they also have a larger cubicle for families. The pitches were spaced out and very generous, we had a large tent with electric hookup and had plenty of space to pitch up and for the car. It's such a lovely place to stay, even with the local farm life. Lots of local walks with beautiful views of the coast from the hills and The Old Man of Coniston. Shops are about half hour away in Ulverston, but it was easy to find. We loved our stay and plan to come back again after such a beautiful visit.

Lovely site and people. Little hard to push in tent pegs as ground is very stoney underneath soil.

Birchbank was a quaint little farm, way up in the hills away from any noise. It was a quiet, peaceful little getaway, perfect for our family to relax and enjoy nature. There are all the facilities you need including pot washing, fridges, showers, water tap and even a little stream running though the middle for the kids to play in.

A lovely little farm

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2022

Birchbank is a lovely little farm, secluded on the fells near Ulverston and Coniston. Local amenities are a short drive away, but not difficult to navigate if single track roads don't bother you. Facilities were basic but clean and in good working order. The campsite is small and quiet, ideal for families and backpackers. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

Stunning scenery, clean and tidy pitches and good facilities, including laundry area with freezer, showers and toilets. Well off the beaten track but perfect for a quiet getaway within 20-30 minutes of Coniston and Windermere. The only slight downside was the cows who loved having conversations with each other in the middle of the night! Highly recommend this site though.

This farmyard campsite was a great find. The views are glorious, you’re amongst the clouds, and getting to watch the collie at work herding the sheep was a real treat. Even watching the peaks vanish in a rain storm was rather wonderful, safe inside the tent with a cup of tea. It’s rare to find such a gorgeous natural location with an electric hookup for tents and decent showers etc. Facilities are basic but just what you need, lovely walks and bike ride in the area. A great base for exploring the lakes.

What a view

First thing is the views. The Lake District is beautiful and I have never been to a campsite with such nice views outside of your tent. We were part of a large group, and had the majority of the central area which was brilliant as we were able to set up how we wanted, all around one gazebo. It is worth noting this is a working sheep farm and animal noises should be expected throughout the night. The facilities were ok. I have been on other campsites when cleaning is carried out at regular times. However, I believe due to it being part of a working farm, cleaning is carried out when required. I noticed as the campsite got busy, soap and paper towels started to empty a lot more quickly. The facilities were ok, shared showers and toilets. These could do with additional hooks and shelves as well as stools for children so they can use the soap etc unattended. The campsite was great and I would recommend.

Site's response

The facilities are cleaned twice every day and more often if required.

Absolutely beautiful campsite

We loved Birchbank farm. It's was in the middle of nowhere, which we loved. Lots of nice walks. Horses sheep and cows all roaming near the camp site. Only a 40 min drive into Windermere and other places.

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2022

Lovely site, great location and easy to find - relatively basic, but in a charming and remote way not a Bear Grylls way. The camping areas could do with pitches being marked out to make it easier to pitch and find space, but it really is a lovely spot. The owners were lovely and very chatty and helpful.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesJul 2022

Nice place in quiet, remote location with beautiful sunsets just a short walk away. This farm provides clean facilities: showers/toilets, wash up point and fridge. I liked watching mornings and evenings on the farm, listening to the cows, sheep and other creatures making plenty of communication between themselves and reacting joyfully to the farmer's arrival (feeding time). It was nice change for somebody living in the town on a quite densely packed street.
