Majestic castles
No trip to Conwy would be complete without a visit to the castle. If there’s a budding historian in the family, take them to the town and spend the day exploring Conwy Castle. Enjoy the mountain views from the battlements and admire the scenery as you overlook the town.
Once you’ve wandered around the surroundings of this World Heritage Site, head into the castle for equally impressive sights. The private royal chambers and the great hall are particular highlights.
Conwy Castle isn’t your only option for soaking up history however. Gwrych Castle also makes for a fun day out with gorgeous views of the coastline and lovely picnic spots in the grounds to catch your breath and enjoy lunch.
Don’t overlook Deganwy Castle either. These ruins offer breathtaking views over Conwy as well as the surrounding countryside. If you look closely, you’ll spot Conwy Castle too.
Beautiful Snowdonia
Snowdonia offers many opportunities to show off its beauty. Keen walkers will be rewarded with fantastic views over the national park on a hike up Snowdon – the highest mountain in Wales! Take in the breathtaking scenery on your trek to the summit as you gaze out over the mountains and valleys. If you don’t fancy the walk, take the Snowdon Railway for a less ambitious, but no less spectacular, climb.
Thrill seekers looking to get their next fix can ride on the waves at Surf Snowdonia in the Conwy Valley. Surrounded by mountains, this artificial wave pool offers an action-packed day out for the budding surfers in the family. The waves can cater to experienced boarders as well as the beginners hoping to ride their first wave.
For other impressive viewpoints around Snowdonia, stroll on the lawns at Bodnant Garden. Pack a lunch and find your perfect picnic spot as you wander through the meadows and plant life whilst taking in the scenery at the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park.
Whilst you’re there, the Bodnant Welsh Food centre has loads of delicious local fare including fruits and vegetables, cider and beer as well as a lovely tea shop to relax in.
Seaside escapes
Conwy also has plenty of options for days at the beach. Head to Llandudno and see its stunning pier on a day out at the seaside. Take a scenic walk and soak up the beautiful coastline with a 99 in hand as you stroll along the promenade before topping up your tan on the North Shore. The sandy stretch is great for building sandcastles with the kids or wandering by the water as the sun sets.
To admire this landscape from a higher perspective, hop on a cable car from the pier to the peak of Great Orme. Take in the breathtaking views, stretching to as far as the Isle of Man, from the top before enjoying a family-friendly walk on the headland.
Closer to the coast, scenic Abergele is just a stone’s throw from Pensarn beach. Bring your sunglasses and soak up some sunshine before dipping your toes into the water. Keen cyclists can take their bike and pedal along parts of the North Wales Cycle Network.
Other seaside resorts in the county include Colwyn Bay. Breathe in the sea air on your stroll along the golden stretch of sand as you pass the Victoria Pier and find a place to tuck into some fish and chips nearby.
Visitors to Towyn can enjoy a day at the beach alongside the amusements on offer at Knightly’s Fun Park. Get competitive on the go karts, ride on the Great Western train and, for the more daring family members, hop on the Dragon rollercoaster.
If you’re looking for a more secluded spot in Conwy, the charming village of Capel Curig is a hidden gem that offers plenty of walking routes. Stroll by the River Llugwy or walk to the beautiful Swallow Falls – another jewel in Snowdonia’s crown.
Other attractions
Complete with tigers, seals, and lemurs to name a few, the Welsh Mountain Zoo is your day out with a whole load of animals. From Lemur Lookout to Sea Lion Rock, the zoo has plenty of different creatures for you to see. The Children’s Farm, Jungle Adventureland as well as the Tarzan Trail provide the kid-friendly action if the little ones are ready to release some energy.
Blink and you’ll miss the Smallest House in Great Britain in Conwy town. This distinct yet charming little house offers a bit of local history and is a must-see if you’re planning on strolling along the town’s pretty harbour.
History lovers can soak up all things Elizabethan at Plas Mawr. Dating back to the 16th century, step back in time in this elegant town house lying at the heart of Conwy town. Admire impressive paintings and walk in the shoes of its former owners whilst the kids let their imagination run wild after trying on some of the period costumes.
