Located on the edge of the Cotswolds, The Gate Hangs High in Hook Norton is a simple pub site, suitable for camping and touring on unallocated grass pitches. With views of the Oxfordshire countryside, pitch up at this site and sample a pint of one of Hook Norton's ales or a pub meal all on your doorstep. The site is also within 35 minutes of Chipping Norton, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stratford Upon Avon.

There had been a lot of rain prior to our visit and the site was quite slippery and muddy. As it is also a pretty sloping site, levelling blocks are essential. It proved really difficult to get on to the blocks and get level, but of course the site can't be blamed for the awful weather we'd had! The other real problem is that the site is literally next door to a huge plant and skip hire yard. They start very early in the morning - just before 6.00am and the noise of the vehicles is really very intrusive if you're still trying to sleep! The pub is very nice although we didn't manage to eat there. The only day that would have suited us to eat in the pub, they were fully booked. The folks that run the pub (and also own and run the skip site), are lovely and very obliging. The facilities weren't great. The loo inside the pub, which most of the time was accessible, is fine but the other toilet and shower facilities are basic (putting it mildly). Whilst the value for money was ok, it's not a site that we will be rushing back to and I can only recommend it to very heavy sleepers, with all their own facilities, in good weather.

The location was ideal. Unfortunately, after all the rain, the field was really soft and having tried to get on it and got stuck, I ended up parking in the car park for the night. The washroom facilities were well used by others so it was a case of "only touch what is necessary". The pub itself had a great atmosphere and the food was amazing and they were more than happy to make any food choice as a takeaway.

Absolutely can't fault our stay here. Pub was awesome, superb food, great staff and felt welcomed the moment we walked in. Despite the wet conditions on the ground, they have done a great job. Thanks to Nigel for pulling us out π Your family are an absolute credit. Try the brewery, castle, fine distillery and pottery pad. With in walking distance. Hook Norton is a fabulous village. Support local business and have a look.

We found this last minute, and was amazed with the welcome. This family run site provided amazing quality food, good prices, and would go out their way to help or advise. We are definitely going back and would recommend to friends and family.

Absolutely wonderful pub, real ales and great food. Great landlord and hard working team - great service. Camping field was very wet due to weather so we were able to park in the car park which is quite large. Walking from the site is along country roads but not too far to Hook Norton with wonderful walks all around. Very peaceful at night and amazing clear sky to see the stars. Limited number of toilet/shower facilities and as the main camping loo is a shower and can get a bit of a queue when someone has a shower. Had a fabulous stay very dog friendly.

Great, handy location. A simple site with basic facilities. Ground a bit uneven but great for a simple, overnight stop.

We had confused our original booking in Moreton in the Marsh and had to find a pub stopover at short notice. This site fitted the bill perfectly. Katie couldn't have been more helpful and the meal in the restaurant was superb. We will definitely return, thoroughly enjoyed it π

An excellent place to stay behind the pub with pleasant views. We visited the Hook Norton Brewery, which is great. The pub was very friendly and the food and service was excellent.

Being part of the pub is the best bit, the food there is great and good value. The site itself is basic, but that's what we prefer. Will definitely stay there again.

We couldn't have been more warmly welcomed into a beautiful and chilled park. It was really quiet and we ate every night at the pub attached as the food was so good. The shower wasn't wonderful (it needed a bit of a make over) but essentially we were really happy.

We have stayed here before so are returning customers and what an amazing place. I am really sad to hear Pete the landlord is leaving, will be a huge loss.

Nice little set-up with the camping field next to the pub garden. Modest facilities (1 shower room, 1 other toilet) but fine for the size and very clean and well looked after. Great pub with a decent menu and a welcoming staff. The only negatives were a lack of a washing up sink, a couple of overflowing bathroom bins (I know: minor!) and the need to clean up some dog mess next to our plot after some individual had misunderstood societal norms. Overall, would definitely recommend.

We stayed at the top of the field with friends for 4 nights. Perfect location, beautiful fields in view. The pub attached to the field was lovely. Amazing home cooked steak and on the Sunday we had the carvery. The staff were wonderful. The owner of the pub was so nice and friendly. We just canβt fault this location and the Cotswolds is just stunning.

Very welcoming from all staff. Had a lovely fish and chips meal. The grass could have been cut sooner or shorter, as it was far too long. The 1 shower room was very tired and didn't give the impression of being that clean. The shower curtain put me off using it!

Uneven grass field with some electric hook ups. Toilets x2 and shower at rear of the pub. Clean and tidy. Pub is lovely with a great atmosphere and good food and local beers, which makes it an excellent place to stay.

A lovely place to pitch for a couple of nights. Staff in the pub are very friendly and willing to help if they can. The facilities are basic & not the cleanest but overall good value for money!

The locations good as a base for exploring the area. The toilet and shower were clean and modern. The cost for a pitch was great value. The real highlight was the pub, The Gate Hangs High. Friendly and helpful staff, excellent food - evening meal and breakfast - and good beer. A proper local with a friendly and down to earth atmosphere. Really enjoyed our stay.

Stayed for three nights on an electric pitch. We were the first there for the weekend, so got to pick our spot. We went for the corner shielded by trees as there was a storm coming! Field is clean enough, but facilities are basic. It doesn't pretend to be anything else so no issues there. The single shower was warm and clean enough, as was the single loo. You can use the pub loos during opening hours which were much nicer. It is next door to a recycling plant which was very noisy after 7am but I'd read the reviews so no surprises there, just don't expect a lie in. There is no facility to wash dishes, other than the shower room, but there is a cold drinking water tap. As a base, location is good enough, close enough to local villages, couple of pubs etc. not much nearby, so do your research. The pub itself is nice, fairly basic but charming. Nice beers and the food was really really good. Lovely beer garden too. Staff were nice enough, no complaints. Nothing for children, such as a park. Just plenty of grass area for games. On the whole, you get what you pay for! Stunning part of the country, basic site but cheap! Don't expect more than it tells you and you'll be fine!
Okay for a stop over

We didn't use facilities, apart from the pub. Camping field was level in places, would recommend the electric hook up pitches, but the field seems back onto a waste collection site, so lots of noise within metres. Road also noisy. Pub gardens were nice and food OK. We would use it again for a night en-route somewhere else.

Thank you for your review. I do wish people that leave reviews read that we are next to an industrial site, not hiding anything. I can't do much about the road, apart from close them!
