Things to do in Leyburn
Use Leyburn’s convenient location as a base to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Take the Leyburn Shawl Loop or, for a more challenging walk, go for Leyburn’s circular walk which takes in Middleham as well as East Witton.
Another popular walk is the route to Harmby Waterfall. Hear the sound of thrashing water as you picnic under the trees and gaze at the beautiful scenery surrounding this hidden gem.
To soak up a bit of history on your walks, head to Constable Burton Hall and Gardens. Roam the gardens surrounding this lovely Palladian villa before finding a spot to enjoy your packed lunch – perhaps by the stream garden or the lily pond.
Or explore the ruins of Middleham Castle, once the home of King Richard III. Walk to the top of the ruins for a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside.
Head a little further out of the town to roam the halls of Bolton Castle. Find the dungeon, admire the collection at the armory and find Mary Queen of Scots’ bedroom before strolling outside on the grounds at Mary Garden. You can also enjoy seeing bird of prey displays, archery demonstrations and, if you’re lucky, see a wild boar feeding session!
Alternatively, spend an afternoon at ‘The Strangest Place in the World’ also known as the Forbidden Corner. Kids will love exploring the multiple pathways and chambers running all through the woods and can tackle the challenges scattered around the site. See the glass pyramid or try and find the hidden statues.
Afterwards, treat the kids to some scrumptious treats at Inspired Chocolate. Try making some chocolate pizza in one of their workshops and enjoy a hot chocolate, or even a shake, at the café.
For a bit of grub, The Sandpiper Inn boasts a wide selection of dishes and is not far from Leyburn’s main square. Compliment your meal with a tipple of local real ale.
When you’ve finished exploring the town, drive to the Nidderdale AONB and visit the Brimham Rocks for breathtaking views over the area or head to Darlington and walk through the corridors of Walworth Castle.
