Things to do in Knaresborough
Begin your holiday with a visit to Knaresborough Castle and Museum. Towering above the River Nidd, wander to the King’s Chamber before heading down into the dungeon. Youngsters can also enjoy playing a computer game which gives them an interactive way of discovering what life was like in the 14th century.
The grounds of the castle are also a great place to relax and eat a packed lunch. You can hire some equipment and try a game of bowls or head to the putting green.
After roaming through the ruined fortress, discover the mystery surrounding Mother Shipton’s Cave. See what secrets you can uncover in the home of the UK’s most famous prophetess as you head to the Petrifying Well – once believed to have turned people and animals into stone!
If the cave gave you a taste for adventure, take the Knaresborough Spy Mission Treasure Trail. Work together to crack the clues hidden throughout the town in this fun tour of Knaresborough.
When you’ve cracked the code, enjoy splashing about at Knaresborough Pool. Their leisure pool is a great place for youngsters to muck about in and includes a bubble pool and a flume for adults to indulge in too.
To make the most of Knaresborough’s scenery, take Sir Henry Slingsby’s Long Walk. Stroll along the River Nidd, perhaps stopping for a picnic, before ending at the aforementioned well at Mother Shipton’s Cave.
For a pleasant afternoon picnic, head to the Nidd Gorge. Spot the local wildlife and sit under the trees in this old English woodland area.
Or try afternoon tea at the Lavender Tearooms. This café offers a quaint atmosphere to catch your breath after a day of exploring the town and also boasts a wide selection of cakes. There’s a lunch menu too for those who’ve worked up an appetite.
Keen cyclists will enjoy riding along the traffic free Beryl Burton Cycle Way. You’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view from the Nidd Valley Viaduct and, if tempted, there are a few pubs on the route to indulge in a tipple or two.
Just a short drive away, Ripley Castle has a load of fun experiences to be had on its parkland. Try out archery and have a laugh body zorbing amongst the impressive backdrop of the castle grounds. For a city buzz, drive further to York and admire its history and beauty.
