Things to do in Ingleton
Whilst visiting or staying in the village you can visit St Mary's Parish church which was originally built in the 12th century and still has an original 15th century tower.
Also within the town is the beginning of a fantastic walking trail, the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail. The Trail is divided into nine main areas, each with its own distinct geological features and associated plant life. Highlights include the famous Thornton Force which is regarded as one of the finest waterfalls in Yorkshire. The village is surrounded by amazing natural landscapes.
Ingleton Open Air Heated Swimming Pool located in the village is an idyllic place to swim that is open seasonally between the end of May and the beginning of September.
As the longest show cave in Britain, White Scar Cave is a hidden world which has been sculpted by nature over thousands of years. With an expert guide, you will explore a spectacular subterranean world of cascading waterfalls and caverns adorned with thousands of stalactites.
Ingleborough Cave has an awe inspiring range of stunning cave formations. The imposing cave entrance and the large passages are full of artefacts dating back millions of years along with the evidence of the significant impact of the Ice Ages. Tours of the Cave leave from the entrance at regular intervals with an expert guide.
To the east is the Yorkshire Dales National Park, outstanding scenery, a range of wildlife habitats and a rich cultural heritage. It is a fantastic outdoor arena for recreation and peaceful relaxation and a haven for wildlife. Within its boundary are the mountains Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, collectively known as the Three Peaks.
Travel just north east of the village and see the majestic Ribblehead Viaduct, a truly impressive feat of construction showing British engineering at its finest. A bout a miles walk from the viaduct towards Whernside you’ll come across Force Gill Aquaduct, remarkable feat of Victorian engineering.
For those who like walking or cycling the town and surrounding areas are crisscrossed with a myriad of trails running through the parks.
Pick out a pirate name and with a yo ho ho, join the hunt for buried loot on the Settle Treasure Hunt Trail. Salty sea dogs, young and old, will have tonnes of fun searching the streets of Settle for clues.
Get up close with nature at Lakeland Wildlife Oasis. Venture through the tropical halls where bats, butterflies and birds fly freely, become a zookeeper for the day, or meet your favourite animals through the Animal Encounters experience.
Or visit Greenland Village Farm, an artisan village with a fantastic farm, indoor soft play centre and garden centre to enjoy. The Open Farm is still a working ranch and home to more than 120 animals, even some rare breeds! It’s a real hands-on experience, loved by both children and adults (and don't worry if it's raining there's lots undercover).
Slightly further north of Ingleton to find Pennine Bridleway National Trail, the only National Trail that was designed specifically to be used by horse riders, but also offers a fantastic challenge for cyclists. There are places to rent bikes or horses, if you fancy travelling that way, or you can simply take a wonderful walk with the kids.
Also there’s Stone Trail Riding Centre offering a pleasing choice of differing length rides from an hour to a full day, as well as long-distance trail riding holidays lasting several days.
For those looking to explore further afield, Lancaster and Morecambe are both less than an hour from Ingleton by car and good options for day trips.
