Things to do in Huddersfield
Overshadowed by the 900+ foot atmospheric tower at Castle Hill, Huddersfield is a thriving market town packed with great parks, walks and a nod to history as the birthplace of the Rugby League.
Get the kids to burn off some energy at Yorkshire's largest play area, The Zone - which has a maze filled play park, LaserZone, Playworld (with its very own skate rink) Safari Sam's and the High Park PlayZone - enough to keep even the shortest of attention spans happy!
Watch the cool water at Greenhead Park with its paddling pool (the kids are sure to go for it!) and miniature railway. Victorian Beaumont Park's woodland walks, plant strewn castle ruins, cycle paths and great cliff views is a favourite with locals.
Looking for a valveless car, the Skelmanthorpe Flag or a hoard of civil war swag? Well then you need the Tolson Museum! And it won't be hard to get the kids on board since it also includes Ravenknowle Park with a skate park and tennis courts too.
Spend a little time in the weaver's cottages of centuries past at Colne Valley Museum, comparing today's tech with old traditional toys and games. Walk deep beneath the Pennine countryside at Standage Tunnel, before taking a jaunt in a little boat on the water or treating yourself to a taste of local flavours at the Watersedge Cafe.
You won't have to look at Castle Hill for long before you want to take on the challenge of a walk to the top. For 4000 years humans have been active on a its green slopes - and you can only assume that they, too, came for the view!
Next up is the National Trust's Marsden Moor Estate where there's more than 5000 acres to sink your teeth (and boots) into.
Of course there are plenty of gentler strolls, so why not take a gander at the boats and spot the wildlife beside the Huddersfield Broad Canal or head to Cromwell bottom Nature Reserve to see the birds flitting through its woodlands.
Nearby Dewsbury has a stunning minster and the bright city lights of Leeds are only a 20 minute drive away. Much the same time behind the wheel will take you to the edge of the Peaks, which is a real outdoor fan's playground.
