Things to do in Helmsley
Begin your stay at Helmsley with a visit to Duncombe Park. Stroll through the grounds surrounding the estate before setting down for a picnic on the lush greenery.
After lunch, take the kids to meet the creatures at the National Centre for Birds of Prey. Situating on the Duncombe Park Estate, see some of the flying demonstrations from eagles to owls and more. Each of the centre’s demonstrations features different birds too so the longer you stay, the more you’ll get to see!
Or spend the afternoon tucking into your lunch at Helmsley Walled Gardens. Soak up the fresh air and perhaps enjoy a kickabout with the little ones or catch your breath with a hot cuppa and a sandwich at the Vinehouse Café nearby.
For a twist on sightseeing, take the Helmsley Mystery Treasure Trail. Spot the clues scattered throughout Helmsley as the trail takes you to the town’s lesser-known buildings as well as its famous castle.
When you do end up at the castle, take a tour of the extravagant halls and soak up some of the medieval history. Pick up a headset and explore the castle on an audio tour whilst the kids have fun dressing up and running around the grounds.
After touring the castle, explore the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Learn more about the town’s history before resting your feet at the café or find your own picnic spot amongst the beautiful surrounding countryside.
You can look out to the abbey at Rievaulx Terrace. Admire the beautiful paintings on the ceiling in the temples before taking in the stunning view of the abbey ruins.
Make the most of the incredible scenery at the North York Moors National Park by walking or cycling along parts of the Cleveland Way National Trail. Pass by the towering castle as well as the abbey ruins on your way to Sutton Bank.
When you’ve finished wandering through the town, head to York and roam around its castle or explore the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and take in the stunning scenery at Yorkshire Lavender.
