Things to do in Hebden Bridge
Make your first priority a climb to the top of Stoodley Pike. The 400m hill rewards determined walkers with a look at its historical monument as well as a breathtaking view of the surrounding Pennine landscape.
After admiring your surroundings head to Hardcastle Craggs. Wander through this wooded valley before exploring Gibson Mill, which lies at the heart of this national trust beauty spot. The mill tells you more about the history of the valley and lets kids dress up for a bit of role play.
When the little ones have finished enjoying the mill, walk along one of its trails such as the Milk Walk which boasts pretty views by the riverside. You’ll also hear the sound of falling streams.
Young detectives will want to take the Hebden Bridge Mystery Treasure Trail. See if you can crack the codes scattered all through the town as you learn about its past. The trail is a great way of having fun with the kids while also exploring the area.
Once you’ve found the final piece of the puzzle, soak up a bit of history and visit the birthplace of poet Ted Hughes, Mytholmroyd. Head to the south side of the valley and up Scout Rock for a stunning view over the village – if you look hard enough you may even see the poet’s former house!
If the youngsters can’t be tempted with the local history, let them run around at Upsy Daisys. This play area lets kids run around its play frame, complete with obstacles such as a four lane slide and a walk bridge.
Afterwards, enjoy a river cruise over the Rochdale Canal. Sit back and enjoy the scenery with some cake and hot chocolate or book a slot for a spot of afternoon tea.
Continue your scenic tour of the town with a visit to Land Farm Garden. The beautiful six acre garden lies within a sheltered valley. Pick a spot for a late lunch and visit the attached art gallery here too.
Art lovers will also want to check out Hebden Bridge’s Artsmill. Tour round one of the exhibits and see the intriguing displays – free admission too!
When you’ve soaked up the culture and history of the town, journey to Heptonstall and visit the grave of Sylvia Plath or find out more about its past at the museum.
