Things to do in Coventry
Coventry is a city in the centre of the West Midlands, once the capital of England in the 15th century. It has drawn a long line of royalty and is a city steeped in history and lore.
While in the city, you can’t do better than to visit some of the outstanding heritage sites. Stroll through the medieval-fronticed shops in Spon St, or visit the original timbered Charterhouse of St Anne. Pose beside the statue of Lady Godiva in the centre of town imitating her serene expression, what’s not to like about a woman who famously opposed taxes!
For a touch of slightly more recent history, the city boasts no less than three magnificent cathedrals. The breathtaking Coventry Cathedral, the majestic New Cathedral which is a work of true modernist beauty and the ancient St. Mary's Priory.
The original cathedral was destroyed during the bombing of World War Two and stands as a stark reminder of that point in history. Beside this, an artistic new building has been built for Coventry’s future.
Next, take in Lunt Roman Fort which dates back over 2000 years, and then roam through St Mary's Guildhall where you will see rooms that entertained kings and queens of England's past.
If castles are more your thing a visit to any one of the castles in and around the city will be an experience to remember, with Warwick Castle the biggest and grandest of those around. It’s managed by the team behind The Tower of London and puts on fantastic displays, shows and re-enactments for a really interactive visit.
Coventry Transport Museum is the perfect playground for car enthusiasts, taking visitors on a journey from the horse and carriage, to classic motors including the world famous London black cab, which was actually invented in Coventry.
Just outside the city is the Coombe Country Park where you can enjoy a walk through this stunning park with its wildlife and beautiful open areas.
The city of Birmingham and the town of Northampton are great choices for day trips from Coventry. Families will find Cadbury World in Bourneville unmissable for a tour of the famous chocolate factory with plenty of free samples.
