Things to do when camping in Warwickshire

Beautiful rolling hills, a fascinating collection of country homes and castles and a close association with William Shakespeare are just some of the natural, historical and cultural delights that'll make Warwickshire stick in your mind.

Don’t Miss

  • Shakespeare’s birthplace
  • The Royal Shakespeare Theatre
  • Warwickshire’s country parks
  • Warwick Castle

Shakespeare and beyond

From grand country homes to beautiful churches, Warwickshire has plenty to impress. Start by exploring the stunning Stoneleigh Abbey, handsome Ragley Hall or the striking Tudor house of Coughton Court. Then get a little more rural with Charlecote Park, the picturesque ruins of Kenilworth Castle with its Elizabethan garden or the Collegiate Church of St Mary's, a part of which dates back as far as the 12th century.

History lovers will enjoy a trip to Wellebourne Watermill, one of the few left in the country and then going back to the roaring 20's at Upton House, or the beautiful mansion and parkland of Compton Verney. Other notable buildings include the Royal Pumps Rooms where water reign supreme and the striking Stoneleigh Abbey.

The picturesque market town of Stratford-upon-Avon is inextricably linked with one of the world’s most famous playwrights, William Shakespeare. Fans of the Bard can visit Shakespeare's Birthplace as well as Anne Hathaway's Cottage & Gardens, the family home of Shakespeare’s wife. Other architectural attractions linked to Shakespeare include Hall’s Croft, Mary Arden’s Farm, Nash's House and the preserved foundations of New Place where Shakespeare died. There's enough to spend an entire day immersed in his incredible life.

To seee Shakespeare’s final resting place, head to Holy Trinity Church. An exploration of Stratford-upon-Avon while on the trail of the Bard would also not be complete without a visit the Royal Shakespeare Company where visitors can take in a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre (which offers non-Shakespearean plays too, if you fancy a change), as well as enjoy a variety of fascinating theatre tours. Round it all off with the Theatre Tower, which provides great views of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Warwickshire has no shortage of museums and art galleries to entice history and art enthusiasts. Compton Verney boasts six collections of artwork covering areas such as British portraits, Northern European art and Chinese pottery and bronzes. The Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery also features fine art, geology and archaeology, as well as social and industrial history.

Squeeze in a time for St John's House Museum which has a collection spanning back almost 900 years old, and will keep you browsing happily for hours. After that, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum will give you a flavour of the history and heritage that surrounds you.

Rugby fans should head to the Rugby School museum and car lovers should definitely zip down to the Heritage Motor Centre which is home to the biggest collection of British cars in the world. Tudor World offers plenty of insight for anyone who is interested in Tudor life and the Warwickshire Museum has an array of fascinating exhibits including the Sheldon Tapestry Map of Warwickshire, fossils, the country’s second biggest early Roman coin hoard and a working bee hive.

There's no shortage of green spaces to roam within Warwickshire. Visitors looking for a quiet place to relax can take a stroll around the dainty Jephson Gardens or Hill Close Gardens. For something a little wilder, enjoy a ramble in beautiful Oversley Wood or one of Warwickshire’s country parks such as Hartshill Hayes Country Park, Burton Dassett Hills Country Park, Pooley Country Park or Ryton Pools Country Park.

Foodies looking for local Warwickshire produce will be licking their lips at the excellent selection of farm shops and markets as well as restaurants and cafes that are available to tuck into, while a tour of the Church End Brewery provides refreshing insight into the brewing process.

A wealth of outdoor options

If a bit (or a lot!) of action is in order then look no further than Warwickshire’s great range of activities, with something to suit people of all ages and fitness levels. Warwickshire’s country parks provide excellent opportunities for walking and cycling.

The Kenilworth Greenway, the Stratford Greenway and Kingsbury Water Park all welcome walkers, cyclists and horse riders, while the Offchurch Greenway is superb for cycling and walking. Kingsbury Water Park also incorporates 15 lakes, making it a good choice for visitors who wish to participate in  sailing, powerboating and fishing.

In addition, there are many other walks and cycle routes that provide excellent opportunities to explore the diversity of Warwickshire, from its towns and villages to canals and natural landscapes.

Always wanted to ride a camel but never had the opportunity? Well there’s no reason to leave the UK to do so, as Warwickshire offers an unforgettable animal activity in the form of camel trekking.

Golfers have a choice of courses to enjoy within Warwickshire such as Leamington & County Golf Club, Kenilworth Golf Club or Stratford-upon-Avon Golf Club, while for something a bit different take a swing at disc golf at Quarry Park Disc Golf, an activity that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

Adventure seekers will feel their adrenaline race at Adventure Sports or Garlands- paintballing, quad biking, 4x4 off-road driving and archery are all on offer.

Cute animals across the county

There’s more to Stratford-upon-Avon than just its association with William Shakespeare and a variety of enticing attractions are available for families. The Stratford Butterfly Farm is the biggest tropical butterfly farm in the UK, while S&D Falconry enables animal enthusiasts to handle and fly birds of prey.

An exploration of the MAD (Mechanical Art and Design) Museum and STMO'S Magic Alley are also entertaining ways to engage younger and older minds alike.

Fancy some free family fun with fantastic animals? Then trot on over to the Redwings Horse Sanctuary Oxhill Visitor Centre. There’s no entry charge and a host of wonderful horses, donkeys and ponies wait to greet visitors.

If intrepid adventuring sounds like a grand family quest then charge forth and spend the day conquering Warwick Castle. The castle boasts over a thousand years of history and provides a wealth of entertainments. In addition to discovering the grand interiors and attractive castle grounds and gardens, brave explorers can venture into the Castle Dungeon, experience the magic of Merlin: The Dragon Tower and be charmed by the Princess Tower. There’s also the opportunity to see the world’s biggest working siege machine and a variety of daily shows and activities.

Families who are looking for relaxing and entertaining attractions should make tracks for the Avonvale MES Miniature Railway which provides a train treat for all members of the family. Alternatively why not create a personalised souvenir of a fantastic family outing courtesy of a visit to the Potter In Craft Studio which offers a selection of enticing arty activities such as pottery painting, mosaicking and canvas painting.

If you fancy the simple fun of a picnic in gorgeous scenery, your best bets will be the Ryton Pools Country Park or the Jephson Gardens.
