Things to do in Glencoe
Glencoe boasts incredible countryside, plenty of excellent walks and activities to suit anyone with a taste for the outdoors, and breath-taking views. If you're looking to escape to the real Scottish hills, this would be a great place to start. Myth, legend and history all surround Glencoe. In fact, as you drive through, you're making your way through the heart of an ancient volcano.
If it's good enough to feature in Bond's Skyfall flick or the Harry Potter movies, it's likely to impress!
The most obvious attraction in this area is the superb walking and mountain climbing on offer. This is an unmissable place to come during the winter if skiing, sledging or snowboarding are your cup of tea.
By why see this stunning landscape the conventional way? There are geocaching adventures to be had, photography expeditions in search of that perfect shot and even 1-day personalised guided tours with an expert who'll take you exactly where you want to go.
Being situated on the banks of Loch Leven there are also plenty of watersports to try your hand at, with sea kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding and fishing. Other outdoor activities include mountain biking, canyoning and golf at the Dragons Tooth Golf Course.
In the village of Glencoe you can find the Glencoe Folk museum which is housed in a lovely thatched cottage, and history lovers will enjoy a visit to the James Stuart Memorial too. The Ballachulish Slate Quarry is a gentler walk than most in the area and still offers mindblowing views with a little less of a challenge!
But if it's a challenge you're seeking, don't forget that Glencoe is famous for its mountains and there are plenty to tackle in the surrounding area such as Glen Etive, Glencoe Mountain, Bidean nam Bian, Aonach Eagach, Stob Coire Sgreamhach and Am Bodach. These all boast stunning views of the surrounding countryside at their summits and the chance to feel as though you're standing on top of the world.
Alternatively if you would rather keep both feet on level ground then Eilean Munde is a nearby island to explore, and Glencoe Lochan offers peaceful walks around the water's edge.
If the weather turns against you in Glencoe, there are two schools of thought. Either embrace it by getting soaked- you can dive into incredible waters canyoning at Vertical Descents in Onich, or take your activities indoor with ice climbing in an indoor arena, located at Ice Factor in Kinlochleven.
Nearby you can explore the Cairngorms National Park, the bustling town of Fort William, and the nearest city, Perth, is just over 2 hours' drive away.
