It could be a hidden garden, a delightful parkland golf course, museums that are treasure troves of local history, lovely red-hued sandstone bridges, or a medieval stronghold. Wherever you end up, it's probably going to be a place which will steal your heart.
Beginning with the outdoors, Dock Park is a great children's play area set within picturesque grounds. The park is landscaped and contains an interesting sunken garden that used to be an old quarry. A range of other activities are also available whatever your age, including tennis, bowling, putting and trampolining. This a great place for outdoor fun throughout the year, as it is only a short walk from the centre of town, plus it is set beside the beautiful River Nith, and there are picnic areas.
Fans of Robert Burns will not want to miss a visit to Robert Burns' House where the poet spent the last years of his life.
Well worth visiting is the fascinating Dumfries Museum, the locally treasured museum tells the unique story of the land and people of Dumfries and Galloway, including fossilised footprints of prehistoric animals, exhibits on the wildlife of the Solway and cave man era tools and weapons. The Camera Obscura, conceptual predecessor of the camera, was installed in 1836 on the top floor of the old windmill tower. From it you can see a fascinating panoramic view of Dumfries and the surrounding countryside.
Don’t miss the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum which is a fascinating outing too. The restored control tower of the former WWII airfield at Dumfries, Scotland is the centrepiece of the museum and is now a listed building. It houses a large and ever-expanding aircraft collection, aero engines and a very impressive display of artefacts and personal histories relating to aviation, past and present. Both civil and military are represented.

There is also a nature trail leading around the castle moat and through the woods to the site of the old castle.
Nature lovers will also enjoy discovering the beautiful WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre. A rugged and beautiful destination offering open space and tranquil wildlife watching. Wander through wildflower meadows spotting orchids, butterflies and dragonflies.
