Things to do in Whitstable

The vibrant yet charming coastal town of Whitstable in Kent has a variety of bait to tempt every type of camper. Shoppers, beach lovers and culture vultures will all find something to their taste here.

We suggest taking the time to explore the delightful town at a leisurely pace. There are a number of enticing independent shops to discover, as well as plenty of pubs and restaurants in which to recharge your batteries during a busy day of sightseeing.

Those with a passion for art, theatre or history are well catered for with venues such as the Horsebridge Arts and Community Centre and Playhouse Theatre Whitstable offering great live entertainment. The Whitstable Museum and Gallery is a fascinating place to explore too, while the Chappell Contemporary is a must for visitors with an interest in contemporary art.

Whitstable Castle & Gardens is an attractive place to potter and group tours of the castle are available, while the gardens are home to tempting tea rooms. Afterwares, head to Tankerton Slopes for a stroll, it's a grassy area with colourful beach huts and beautiful views of the beach. Hang around as the day ends to enjoy a wonderful sunset.

Tankerton Beach (pebbles) is a great spot to cool off during hot summer days. Enjoy the two mile walk or cycle ride from here to Herne Bay, or head out along the Street during low tide. This shingle spit offers fantastic views but take care to check the tide times!

If you can muster up the energy, a visit to historical Canterbury via the Crab and Winkle Way is a must. The six mile route cuts through the pretty countryside and a return trip is a lovely way to spend the day.

Whitstable Harbour is not to be missed either, with a number of stalls to explore and yet more cafes and restaurants. Be sure to try the delicious fresh seafood - if you don't fancy oysters then the Whitstable Oyster Company does a mean lobster.

Oysters are a big thing here and the Oyster Festival in July sees some 80,000 people descend on the town for 10 days of food and live performances.

Interesting local family attractions include Wildwood, Blean Woods National Nature Reserve (and Victory Wood alongside) and Howletts Wild Animal Park.
