Things to do in Tunbridge Wells
One of the Seven Wonders of the Weald, Royal Tunbridge Wells (often referred to as just Tunbridge Wells) is one of Kent's busier towns. Wonderful architecture, shopping, galleries, theatres and greenspaces make it a destination that appeals to all ages and interests.
The town boasts an excellent range of shops, restaurants and cafes for sightseers to explore. Particularly popular is the area known as the Pantiles which is a vibrant location with a variety of enticing shops and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. It is also home to the iron rich Chalybeate Spring - without which the town itself might not have existed - with people travelling from far and wide to 'take the waters.'
The area's pretty greenspaces are ideal retreats to escape the hustle and bustle for a bit. Calverley Grounds is a beautiful spot in the centre of town, while further out Dunorlan Park is a great place for walks and fun on the boating lake. Kids will enjoy clambering over Wellington Rocks before sitting down for a well-earned picnic.
There are several excellent museums and galleries including the Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery and the Fairfax Gallery. There are also a number of theatres offering a great range of shows, including the Assembly Hall Theatre and Trinity Theatre.
Sightseers should also make time to visit the tranquil ruins of Bayham Old Abbey and picturesque Scotney Castle with its beautiful garden. Marle Place Gardens and Gallery is also sure to entice gardeners and nature lovers, and all three attractions are less than 10 miles from the town centre.
Fenton's Rink is England's only dedicated curling rink and offers you the change to have a go yourself. Do you have what it takes to match the Olympic stars who made curling a surprise hit in this country?
Situated slightly further out but still within easy access of the town is Bewl Water Country Park which is a great location for walks, cycling and watersports. Recently opened Chimera Climbing Centre is a fantastic place to try your hand at climbing too.
A trip on the excellent Spa Valley Railway is a fun way to see the surrounding area in a relaxing way, while other attractions slightly further afield include the High Weald AONB, Bedgebury National Pinetum & Forest (with Go Ape course), Hever Castle and Tonbridge Castle.
