Things to do in Tonbridge
The market town of Tonbridge in the heart of Kent is blessed with a rich heritage and stunning scenery, sitting atop the River Medway.
In the town, Tonbridge Castle dates back to medieval times, while Penshurst Place has a terrific toy museum and some of England's most beautiful gardens, with history going back to the 1500s. A five mile cycle route links the two.
Recently restored, Hadlow Tower just north east of the town, is completely unique in design. The 360 degree viewing platform (130 feet up) offers superb views across the North Kent Wealds.
Also nearby, 14th century Ightham Mote is popular with National Trust members.
The popular Haysden Country Park offers a nature reserve, as well as lakeside walk, outdoor play area and picnic spot. Families with young children will also enjoy Hop Farm - and the huge Wear M Out soft play centre, if the kids need to let off steam.
For something a bit different, try a visit to The Oast Theatre - a prolific theatre in a 19th centry oast house, typical of the area.
Just a few miles south is Royal Tunbridge Wells with much to explore. Teenagers might well like to try climbing at the excellent Chimera Climbing Centre.
A little further away is Bewl Water near Lamberhurst, reachable in 30 minutes or so by car.
