Things to do in Ross-on-Wye
Ross-on-Wye is a small market town in the West of England, an ideal place to dabble in the beauty of the countryside, hone your canoeing skills on the River Wye and tickle your fancy with history and culture. The River Wye itself is well setup for a leisurely canoe ride, home to dragonflies, Atlantic salmon and wandering kingfishers - as it travels all the way from Wales on a meandering course.
The town is paved with historic buildings, starting with Goodrich Castle. This landmark might now be in ruins, but it still has the dignity and intrigue of a Norman medieval castle about it, sitting between Ross-on-Wye and the neighboring town of Monmouth. Wilton Castle is its Norman companion, built in the 12th century, and sits adjacent to the town. Visit at dusk to watch the sun stream behind the eerie ruins and you'll find it a spectacular spot for snapping photos. For added romance, sniff out the sweetly scented old fashioned roses in its garden.
In the town itself, St Mary's Parish church is crowned with a towering spire, over 205 feet tall, that can be seen for miles around. But if you're on the hunt for tales of derring do, Footsteps Battlefield Tours will guide you round the area's battlefields with insightful stories of the heroes and the chance to trace some of the 20th century's greatest deeds.
Bring the little ones to watch the flutter of beautiful specimens at Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, or if they're in need of something more fast paced, pop over to Symonds Yat West Amusement Park which boasts fairground rides, arcades and the chance to catch a boat trip on the River Wye that requires you to do no rowing.
The Herefordshire trail links Ross-on-Wye to five other market towns (Leominster, Bromyard, Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye and Kington) and is a 154 mile track which is popular with walkers and cyclists. The track takes you past many churches and inns and provides spectacular views of the mountainous Herefordshire countryside.
Nearby you might like to visit Clearwell village where you can discover the intricate natural cave system that has given us thousands of years of iron ore. The larger cities of Hereford, Cheltham and Gloucester are under an hour's drive away, just right for a mini visit.
