Things to do in Windermere
10.5 miles long, Lake Windermere is England's largest lake (mere being an old English word for a body of water) and the Lake District's most commercialised. The busy little town of Windermere is situated just under a mile from the lake itself and, along with Bowness-on-Windermere on the lakeshore, is a superb base for exploring the immediate vicinity and wider Lakes region.
Visitors will also appreciate the attractive architecturem, while the short climb up Orrest Head at the top of the town offers some of the best 360-degree views you'll ever witness, over the lake and across to surrounding towns.
A boat trip on the lake is a must for first time visitors, before getting some exercise on the many walking and cycling trails. The Windermere's Western Shore route at 5.5 miles is a highlight and explores the lake's quieter side, but there is something for everyone.
Mountain biking, water sports, abseiling, ghyll scrambling, rock climbing, paragliding and many other sports are also well catered for.
Open water swimming too has become popular, though there are quieter lakes less busy with boat traffic. The Great North Swim takes place on the lake every year in June, with thousands of swimmers taking part. It should be noted that the lake waters can be very cold and hypothermia is a real risk. Wear a wetsuit and enter the water slowly to give your body time to get used to it.
The whole family will enjoy visiting the World of Beatrix Potter at Bowness-on-Windermere, to see the wonderful Beatrix Potter stories brought to life and relive the classic tales. Across the lake at Near Sawrey, National Trust members can explore Hilltop House, Beatrix Potter's charming 17th century farmhouse home.
Just north of Windermere town at Ecclerigg, Brokehole will be very popular with children too, with plenty of activities on offer. The adventurous among you will enjoy having a go on the Treetop Nets.
Other interesting attractions in the area include the Windermere Steamboat Museum, Rydal Water and Holebird Gardens.
