Things to do in Peterborough
Nestled in the countryside of the East of England is this well located city with the magic combination of a bustling town centre, lovely rural walks and forests surrounding it.
Striking Peterborough Norman Cathedral is a great place to start your day's sightseeing with its extensive grounds and you can top that off with a look at how the city's changed over time - at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery. Grab a coffee in the museum cafe afterwards and then turn up the spook factor with a go in their mysterious escape rooms, or a look into the Priestgate Vaults - which are just for those who aren't scared of the dark!
Love sport? You'll be well kitted out here with more than one football stadium, ice hockey venues and a greyhound racing track.
Go for green in Ferry Meadows Country Park and in the nearby village of Helpston you can poke your nose around the poet John Clare's classic cottage. So come and sample his verse and then sample the delicious specials in the cafe at the cottage. For a spot of Elizabethan finery, you need to take a detour to Burghley House.
The Peterborough Green Wheel offers keen walkers and cyclists 80 kilometres of foot and cycle paths through lovely countryside. Take a saunter through traffic free paths and follow the river along its route.
Around the city you'll find more than 20 nature reserves - so it's easy to spend time in nature - and the Nene Valley railway also runs through Peterborough. Take your little 'uns to steam through the history of these nostalgic trains and hop aboard them too. The pintsize Railworld Wildlife Haven next door will grab their attention with its model trains!
Once they've choo-choo'd to their heart's content, bring happy youngsters the Exotic Pet Refuge where they can be keeper for the day or book a photography sesh at the refuge. Say hello to some four legged friends at charming Sacrewell Farm and give the kids a go in their massive play barn.
Nearby, the village of Longthorpe is famed for its three storey tower and medieval murals, and you can see the remains of where Fotheringhay Castle stood up until the 1600s, with a walk on its smooth green hillside or along the River Nene. A quick ride to Kettering opens up the grand stately home and grounds at Boughton, or head to the city of Cambridge for its elegant university, historic architecture and extensive botanical gardens.
