Bringing the past vividly to life

Anglesey Abbey is a stunning place to visit. The house was bought by Lord Fairhaven in 1926 and he took it upon himself to build a place of outstanding beauty. You'll wander the majestic house, visit the beautiful gardens, explore the lode mill and much more. Outside the wildlife discovery area and treehouse are quick to awaken your inner child. 

Peterborough Cathedral is the resting place of Catherine of Aragon and Mary Queen of Scots was also originally buried here before her body was reinterred at Westminster Abbey. Feast your eyes on the cathedral’s striking west front and for those who are not afraid of heights there is the option to take a tower tour and see the city race beneath you. 

Another magnificent city centre cathedral is Ely Cathedral, home to stunning interiors and an immensely beautiful facade. While you're there, grab a bite in Ely and slip down narrow alleyways to find Oliver Cromwell’s House, the home of the man who beheaded a king. 

The King's College Chapel in Cambridgeshire is truly a sight to behold. Being a working college it is a busy and vibrant place which makes the grand chapel seem warm and inviting and the superb choir is all you'd hope for. Of course, you can't miss moseying around the cavernous halls of the University of Cambridge which is one of the most prestigious universities in the world. The university boasts a number of museums such as the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and the Polar Museum to name a few. Thanks to free entry, these museums are perfect for your budget hitlist.

To pull back the curtain of Britain’s military past, your first stop as to be the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. This is Britain’s best-preserved WWII airfield and offers an intriguing history stretching back to WWI. Here visitors can watch exhilarating air shows, explore planes and be awed by mighty tanks.

Peckover House is an excellent example of a grand Georgian townhouse that features a stunning walled garden. When visiting you can explore the house, wander in the 300-year-old orangery, stroll around the attractive gardens and finish the visit with a trip to the delightful Reed Barn tea room. 

The grounds and park at the Wimpole Estate are more than worth making time for, including the handsome Wimpole Hall and beside it, the Grade 1 listed park was once home to ancient Romans. These days there's traces of that heritage still and the current residents are wildlife, while the estate’s working farm, Home Farm, houses rare breed animals and a chance to bring a taste if something delicious home with you..

For nature lovers and anyone who likes the outdoors the Cambridge University Botanic Garden is a lovely place to spend some relaxing hours. These beautifully kept gardens extend over 40 acres and also boast wonderful glasshouse displays of plants from around the world which are sure to tempt visitors. Alternatively for something wilder step foot into the Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve which is the oldest National Trust nature reserve. Boasting more than 8500 species of wildlife, this wetland is a real treat for nature lovers.

Lazy rivers and sweeping parks

When visiting the River Cam you can enjoy a relaxing riverside walk, take a guided punt tour or even punt yourself. This delightful means of exploring the surrounding area is a great way to take in the local architecture as well as the landscapes of establishments such as King's College, Trinity Hall and Trinity College.

Nene Park boasts beautiful natural landscapes such as the Ferry Meadows Country Park and has a world of enticing walking and cycling paths, golf courses and horse-riding routes. Exciting water-based activities such as kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and fishing are on the cards, too.

High Harthay Outdoor Pursuits is the spot for action fans, where you can turn your hand to clay pigeon shooting, air rifles and air pistols, as well as archery in the clean air of the Cambridgeshire countryside.

A sure way to get the blood pumping is an adrenaline-filled day at Battlefield Live in Peterborough. Accommodating adults and children, this exciting team-based combat game uses state-of-the-art technology to provide an authentic yet safe battlefield experience. Alternatively if high flying is more your thing book a Flight Simulator Experience  through Virtual Aviation and find out what it’s like to fly an Airbus or a Boeing jet airliner.

Close encounters of the animal kind

For family days out not much can beat the Shepreth Wildlife Park. This great park offers attractions for everyone from Bug City, to the Aussie Walk and even a bat cave fit for Batman (although, in this case, filled with fruit bats).

If the wildlife park meets with a roar of approval and anticipation for even more animals, then Fens Falconry should be your next stop. It requires booking beforehand but the experience days provide amazing hands-on animal interactions with awe-inspiring raptors. For those who are keen to see the birds of prey in a more natural setting, the hunting days are tougher but well worth doing too.

Animal lovers can also zoom to the zoo in Cambridgeshire. The Linton Zoo has a hugde range of prowling big cats, plus captivating Crowned Lemurs, Brazilian Tapirs, Mongoose Lemurs and a wide variety of birds - plus other residents keen to meet you. 

For people who are enthralled by ancient animals, Fossils Galore is a prehistoric park that will take your love of dinosaurs to the next level.
