9 fun things to do in Belfast for kids

As the capital of Northern Ireland, Belfast has plenty of attractions to offer holidaymakers. The city may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a fun-filled family camping trip, but there are loads of things to do in Belfast for kids. Just take a look at our list below for some fantastic ideas to help you have a great holiday in Northern Ireland.

1. W5

W5 is a fun and interactive learning centre for kids of all ages, allowing them to get involved in games, puzzles and various other exhibits focused on science and technology. There is a unique mix of activities that children and adults alike will enjoy, you really must see for yourself! Tickets are £7.50 for adults and £5.50 for children. The W5 is located in Odyssey, Northern Ireland’s Landmark Millennium Project near the River Lagan.

2. Titanic Belfast

Belfast is famous for being the birthplace of the ill-fated Titanic. This museum is not only impressive on the outside but is fun and informative on the inside too. The exhibition is very hands-on with many information points and audio headsets where you can listen to the Titanic’s story as you work your way around. Kids will love the cable car ride and ‘lift’ which simulates the ships decks from the bottom to the top deck, giving you real perspective on the ship’s huge size. A visual and interactive tour the whole family will love, get 5% off when you book tickets online. Otherwise, standard admission is £14.75 for adults, £7.25 for kids aged 5 to 16 and free for children under 5 years old.

3. Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo is a real gem. You can see more than 1000 animal species, such as lions, kangaroos, monkeys, giraffes and bears. The zoo holds various special events throughout the year, such as the Twilight Tour which enables you to enter the zoo when it gets a little darker to see how some animals behave differently in the night. The 55 acre site has some stunning gardens to wander around with a huge variety of plants and trees as well as a large picnic area, play area and farm for the little ones to explore. Family tickets are around £30.

4. Ulster Museum

Open every day except Mondays, this museum is just a 20 to 30 minute walk from the Belfast city centre. Here, you can discover some fantastic and engaging exhibits showcasing dinosaurs, Egyptian mummies and fossil collections It is a treasure trove for the curious and a real interactive learning experience. Situated in the city’s Botanic Gardens, admission is free and there’s a good restaurant on site.

5. Aunt Sandra’s Candy Factory

This popular and sugar-filled attraction is a must see for everyone. Watch children’s eyes widen at the sights and smells of the handmade sweets and fudge. This little factory and shop began in 1950. You can watch demonstrations of boiled sweets and lollipops being made and have a go at making your own candyfloss! There are quizzes and prizes to be won as you look around.

6. Belfast Castle

Belfast Castle is an excellent family day out. First built by the Normans in the 12th century, the castle is steeped in history. Although you cannot tour the castle itself, you can wander around the beautiful landscaped gardens and see the spectacular views of Belfast city. There’s a good restaurant and admission is free. The kids will love the Cave Hill Adventure Playground on the castle’s estate which has swings, slides and sand pits. Plus there’s a zip wire for the older kids too.

7. Streamvale Open Farm

Streamvale Open Farm has a variety of traditional farm animals, from big dairy cows and pigs to cute baby bunnies and chicks! The children can feed the animals while learning all about the countryside and farm life. There is plenty of space for the kids to let off some steam in the play area. There are pony and tractor rides for the little ones and quad bikes for the big kids as well as nature trails the whole family can enjoy. Open daily, adult tickets are £5 and children are £4.20 with under 3’s getting in for free.

8. Dundonald International Ice Bowl

Dundonald International Ice Bowl in Castlereagh offers lots of things to do. Located just 20 minutes from the city centre, you can enjoy ice skating on the Olympic-sized rink, tenpin bowling or have fun in Indiana Land, an indoor adventure playground for young kids. For certain activities, you can make savings on the price by using Tesco Clubcard vouchers. There’s even a caravan and camping site just 5 miles away, making it the ideal base for exploring Belfast.

9. Pirates Adventure Golf

This is a truly unique and entertaining way to play golf! Located in Dundonald, there are two available courses called the Captain’s Challenge and Blackbeard’s Adventure. Each has its own obstacles and incredible special effects, such as firing canon, waterfalls and a misty graveyard, to make the experience all the more challenging! A family ticket is around £20 for 18 holes or £30 for 36 holes and is suitable for all ages.

The city of Belfast is a perfect destination to visit if you have children. The huge list of attractions will keep them thoroughly entertained for many hours while the large number of campsites in the area is sure to make your family trip great fun.
