The closest site to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Barn at Beal is a small family-run campsite based on a working arable farm. There are 11 tent pitches and 16 hardstanding pitches, all of which have EHU. In high season it is advisable to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

About The Barn at Beal

The Barn at Beal is the closest camping and touring site to Lindisfarne - or Holy Island as it is also known - being less than a mile from the start of the tidal causeway crossing to the island. The panoramic view from the terrace is second to none. On a clear day you can see from Goswick Sands to the north, Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle with the Farne Islands behind in the east, and Ross Sands and Bamburgh Castle to the south east. It is a breathtaking view. The campsite is on an arable farm, which provides barley for Timothy Taylor Landlord (something you can enjoy from the cask in the bar!). It's also located in a National Nature Reserve and within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Being a small site is one of the reasons people stay here. All of the 26 pitches have electric if you require it, and the majority of pitches have an open view of the coastline. The site is particularly popular both with cyclists - being on the Coast and Castle cycle route - and with walkers, as St Oswald's Way and St Cuthbert's Way passes close by.

Northumberland is called 'The Secret Kingdom' because with its empty beaches and quiet country roads, it appears sparsely populated. It's a place to come to get away from the crowds and the pressures of day-to-day life - hugely popular with outdoorsy people, bird-watchers, walkers, cyclists - and those who just want some peace and quiet.

7 miles to the north is Berwick-upon-Tweed, with its ancient Elizabethan Walls and, as any Berwicker will tell you, the only example of bastioned town walls in Britain and one of the best preserved in Europe.

To the south is Bamburgh Castle, a good day out for the family if the weather is inclement.

The big attraction on the doorstep though is the island of Lindisfarne, accessed by a tidal causeway (do read the tide timetables situated at both ends of the causeway for your own safety). You can often be the only person on its many miles of beaches.
