Rue du Chateau offers tranquillity on a small site nestled between a young woodland, a pond and the river. There are red squirrels, deer and birds of prey passing through and miles of forest tracks around for cyclists and walkers. Get away from it all and truly switch off at this almost wild camping site on a quiet farm, located in the Scottish Borders. It's just over an hour's drive from Newcastle, Carlisle and Edinburgh.

About Rue du Chateau

The farm is a quiet space in the rural Scottish Borders, with fields, woodlands and forest tracks to explore nearby. Guests have remarked on how quiet the space is, with just the noise of the river and animals. Choose your own spot along the riverbank, close to the farm there are a small number of mown areas, and also forty acres of rough grassy field if you want to find your own space further up river. This site offers basic facilities for a getting back to nature experience. Parking is at the main farm with wheel barrows to assist you with your belongings across the field to the pitch area. There is a portaloo toilet. Fire pits can be available. The farm is home to chickens, sheep and two friendly ponies. Wildlife include deer, ducks, badgers, birds of prey, red squirrels and more. Midges haven't really been a problem, though horse flies can leave a nasty bite, so do bring the antihistamine cream just in case.

Open from 1 April to 30 September

Facilities and amenities

Limited facilities on site include drinking water and a small portaloo in the horsebox - there are no shower amenities. Mobile phone reception is generally poor - this is getting back to basics camping! Cars park at the farm and it's a short walk to the pitches, with wheelbarrows to help move your gear.

About two miles away or a half hour walk is Bonchester Bridge, with the Horse and Hound pub (limited opening hours). A 15 minute drive take you to Denholm offering Cross Keys with great meals and a warm welcome, or Hawick with supermarkets and the Santa Marina restaurant.

Interested in staying at Rue du Chateau?

Call 07581 503340 to book.

Unfortunately Rue du Chateau doesn't share their availability calendar with us yet. Availability changes quickly, especially in summer, so we recommend enquiring by phone to avoid missing out.

Please keep all gates closed as you explore, due to the livestock and likelihood that you will find a sheep or pony in your tent helping themselves to your sandwiches.

Don't climb the fences, use the gates and stiles that are in place.

Children and dogs are welcome but we ask that they are not left unsupervised and dogs remain on leads and any mess is collected, it is a magical spot to enjoy, but not run wild, please respect other guests.

Fire pits are available, disposable BBQs are accepted, but please do not have camp fires on the ground. Logs are available at a small charge. Do not strip the young woodland of branches. Do not light fires in windy conditions. No naked flames, candles or fire lanterns.

No vehicles in the fields, parking is at the farm.

Please be respectful of the quietness of the area, no loud music, shouting etc, this means quiet children and dogs too!

Take rubbish away with you, leave the site as you find it.

You are welcome to explore the two fields along the riverbank, access is restricted by the farm vegetable patch and the main farmhouse. Please follow the country code in the surrounding area.

Right here at Rue du Chateau you'll find wild swimming, lovely walking and hiking. On sunny days visitors can enjoy a swim or paddle in the river - there are pools, and stony spaces to choose from. The river has a small area which can take inflatable boats (not long canoes or kayaks) and is a stunning place to explore.

For road cyclists, the farm is just off the Sustrans Borders Loop and the single track rural roads have just been resurfaced - so no potholes!

It's not far to Jedburgh which offers a historical abbey and castle jail.
