Things to do on site and in the Wigton area
Sites near borders are real faves, as it's easy to country hop and get the best of both lands within a short drive.
The area is a walker's paradise with beach, woodland and fell walks all easily available from the site. If walking seems a little slow, cycling and mountain biking are everywhere in this area, with rental facilities and well-marked trails throughout.
On the English side of the Firth, Solway guests can reach the north-western lakes of the Lake District National Park, day trips to Carlisle and the hills and stargazing in Northumberland National Park.
On the Scottish side, all the delights of Dumfries and Galloway such as hiking the Galloway Hills, running away to Gretna or driving further afield to urban days out at Edinburgh or Glasgow.
To see it all at once, take a trip to championship Solway Golf Course where you can tee off to views of the Lakeland Fells, Galloway Hills and across to the Isle of Man.
Lake District land and water fans have Buttermere, Loweswater, Crummock Water and Bassenthwaite Lake among the Northern Lakes close to Solway Holiday Village, each with their own popular pulls for visitors. Bassenthwaite, one of the biggest bodies of water in the Lake District, is a hit with windsurfers, canoeists and sailors launching dinghies from Bassenthwaite Sailing Club.
Buttermere has a circular route (of about four miles) around its shores. Those with more energy can head to Crummock Water instead for a nine mile walk around the lake and through the Lanthwaite Woods. South of Crummock Water and back towards Buttermere. Look out for Scale Force, the Lake District's tallest waterfall at 170 feet.
Speaking of scaling, heady types also visit the Lake District to scale Scafell Pike and the like inland from Buttermere and its neighbours, or take a most scenic drive through the park to the visitor centre at Windermere.
Moseying towards Northumberland (stop off at Carlisle Castle and The Lanes shopping centre on the way), guests can walk as much of the Hadrian's Wall Path as they can manage: the north of England's most visited tourist attraction.
You'll find several Roman sites along the way, such as the fort of Chesters near Chollerford and the fort at Vercovicium. You can visit other alternative sites via the intersecting Pennine Way.
Happily for such a family-centred site, kiddish fun is all around: the farm park at Orton Grange, getting open-mouthed at the fish and other inhabitants at Lake District Coast Aquarium, or going on a hop around the award-winning World of Beatrix Potter.
