Things to do in Worcester
Worcester is an architecture lovers delight, starting with the lovely Worcester Cathedral with plenty of interesting features to discover, including some fantastic Victorian stained glass, and an ancient library and archive, which is home to the second largest collection of medieval manuscripts in any cathedral in the UK. Kids will love exploring this amazing building, which has an ancient crypt and medieval cloisters to explore, plus the royal tombs of King John and Prince Arthur to examine.
Next up is Tudor House Museum, this beautiful 16th century building in the heart of historic Friar Street is run as a museum by volunteers. Displays focus on the house's past, as a home to Tudor weavers through to its use as an ARP Warden's office in WW2, and a school clinic thereafter.
Don’t miss The Commandery, dating back to the 12th century, this glorious Grade I listed site was once known as St Wulfstan's Hospital. When you visit, you may enjoy attending one of the short talks with demonstrations which include Medieval medicine and Civil War weaponry. Or you might prefer to explore this huge building with its many centuries of architectural styles with the audio tour, or test out one of the activity trail backpacks.
Just around the corner you can find Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum with plenty for families to see and do and it is free to visit. Highlights to look out for include a Roman mosaic pavement, a Glover's Workshop, dinosaur footprints, and a collection of weapons, trophies and skins found by Worcester's Victorian adventurers from uncharted territories of the world!
Another great museum full of fun is The George Marshall Medical Museum a fantastic and free museum on the doorstep of Worcestershire Royal Hospital. They have a recreation of a mid-19th century operation, and you can see one of the operating chairs used at Silver Street Infirmary before anaesthetics (have a go at spotting the holes for ropes to tie down unwilling patients and marks left from the surgeons' knives!). Find out about our apothecary shop with all its amazing glass jars of goodies and grab an audio guide to take you and the kids around the museum.
Your mission should you choose to accept it is simple at Cyber Q. Escape the Rooms! This is an immersive and interactive game where you have 60 minutes to make it out by solving several challenges, including finding hidden objects, problem-solving and figuring out passwords. You also have several scenarios to test yourselves against, with the Crazy Scientist, Demon Barber or Mysterious Castle. All are terribly tricky and all would be a great way to spend time as a family.
If parks and wildlife are your thing head on over to Gheluvelt Park, a fun and free place to take the kids, with a variety of things to do and see. It straddles Barbourne Brook, plus it is close to the River Severn, so there is plenty of wildlife to look out for including kingfishers, mute swans, grey squirrels and more. There are a number of playgrounds and a splashpad with a sprinklers and streams to run through open from April to September.
Or slightly further out try Worcester Wood Country Park... Two nature reserves, a huge open field and a busy countryside centre make this site very popular. There are two adventure play parks, ancient woodlands to explore and space to fly a kite or have a game of rounders. You’ll also find two waymarked trails occupying the park if you fancy a stroll, one through the beautiful and colourful meadows and the other through the shaded woods. The park also offers an orienteering course and geocache for those on a quest.
There’s plenty to do if the weather is not on your side, start with Redpoint Worcester. Tenpin bowling is the classic all weather family activity that can be enjoyed by all ages so why not take your brood out for some good, old-fashioned fun at Tenpin Worcester or MFA Bowl Worcester. Whether they get a strike, spare or the ball falls down the sides, it’s sure to be a great day out at either of these venues.
Take the kids down to Cheeky Monkeys and let them go wild in the exciting indoor soft play centre, let them explore the multi coloured play land, seek out new adventures on each level of the play frame before diving into the ball pool on the ground floor or pop into Little Acorns Indoor Play, housed in a warehouse offering three tier main adventure play area, 4m wavy slide, spiral tube slide, interactive features and games, rock climb traversing wall and a sports court.
South of Worcester you’ll find Croome in High Green. At Croome, you can step into what remains of a secret wartime air base or simply go for a wonderful walk with the kids around the beautiful 18th century gardens with statues, follies, bridges and classical temples. The visitor centre will sweep you back to the 1940s, as you discover the fascinating details of this secret airbase where thousands of people lived and worked covertly! There are miles of different walks to enjoy, don’t miss the route through the Home Shrubbery to the Rotunda, an enchanting ‘garden room' that is surrounded by giant Cedars.
