Things to do in Bury St Edmunds
Start the day with a visit to the Abbey Gardens. Admire the plant life as you stroll along the pretty grounds and catch your breath with a picnic before exploring the remains of Bury St Edmunds Abbey.
Alternatively, spend the day at Nowton Park. Spot the wildlife on your way to the maze before tucking into a packed lunch by the meadow pond.
Afterwards, head to the heart of the town’s historic centre and try something different at Hatter Street Studio. Kids can enjoy painting their own pottery (ideal for budding artists!) whilst older members of the family can relax with a spot of tea and a cake.
Or take part in the Bury St Edmunds Mystery Treasure Trail. Follow the clues hidden around the town on buildings, statues and signs as you see the sights in a fun way.
You could also take the kids to Planet Laser. Head into the arena, grab your laser gun and take cover as you find the perfect hiding spot to pick off your targets. Those feeling particularly energetic can enjoy a game of bowling afterwards or top the scoreboards at the arcade races.
To soak up some local history, head to Moyse’s Hall Museum. Admire the artefacts from the town’s medieval abbey as well as collections from the Bronze Age. Its ever changing exhibits make this a good option for multiple visits too.
There’s also the Greene King Brewery for those with a deep interest in beer. Take a tour of the brewery and head to the roof for a stunning view overlooking the town. After tasting some of the beers on offer, head to the café for a bite to eat.
After you’ve finished exploring the town, head to Ickworth and roam through Ickworth House Gardens before gazing at the many paintings whilst the kids run-around in the play area. Or spend the day spotting the wildlife and admiring the pretty scenery on a stroll at Lackford Lakes nearby.
