Things to do in Aldeburgh
Spend your first day on the beach at Aldeburgh. Stroll along the seafront, dotted with fishing boats to admire, until you’ve found the perfect spot to quietly enjoy your 99 while looking out onto the coast.
After topping up your tan, make sure you try the local fish and chips for dinner. Tuck into a cod and chips at the Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop – famous for their quality batter. It’s only seconds from the seaside too, so you can take dinner with you if you don’t want to miss the sunset.
Get to know the town better on the Aldeburgh Treasure Trail. The whole family can enjoy searching for clues scattered around the town. Find the answers on different signs and monuments as you’re taken through Aldeburgh on a fun route.
When you’ve completed the trail, head to the North Warren RSPB reserve. Keen birdwatchers can see how many of the different birdlife they can tick off their list while walking the South Marsh circuit or the Reedbed loop. If you get tired, stop for a picnic amongst the pretty woodland scenery.
Keen golfers can enjoy a fun round at the Aldeburgh Golf Club. Aim for that hole in one while enjoying the wonderful views of the Alde River. Those looking for a more challenging course can try out the Championship Course.
If you’re looking to soak up some of the history, visit the tower keep of Orford Castle. Explore the many passages as you head up to the roof for the stunning views to Orford Ness.
In the afternoon, take a tour of the Long Shop Museum. Get dressed up for fun photo-shoots while also learning about the interesting stories surrounding this old factory. Learn about the Garrett family before heading to the garden which has plenty of space for the kids to play in.
To find out more about the town’s past, visit the Aldeburgh Museum. Take a look at the intriguing artefacts on display as you walk around the Moot Hall, dating back to the 16th century!
Nearby, head to the Meare in Thorpeness. Hire a boat and row along to any of the small islands dotted around on the lake - kids will love the Peter Pan theme as they find Pirates Lair and Wendy’s Home. Alternatively, explore more of the Suffolk Coast and Heath AONB by walking along the coast at Southwold or head further out to Lowestoft for a day on the rides at Pleasurewood Hills theme park.
