Bring your little folk to the Nicholson Museum and art gallery for a browse of the exhibits and then take in a little live entertainment at the Foxlowe Gallery which has its own cinema, bar and performance space.
Getting out an about in the countryside is easy here. Put your feet up on the beautiful Churnet Valley Railway, or work up a sweat with a climb up The Roaches - the areas famous craggy rocks which have fantastic views from their peaks.
For more fresh air adventures, Biddulph Grange Garden is nearby and is a unique Victorian Garden with a Scottish Glen, Chinese temple and Egyptian court all within its bounds.
Brindley Mill is water powered corn mill built in the mid 18th century, so why not show the kids how their bread is really made then whip over to the The National Trust owned Ilam Park. The RSPB Coombes Valley is also great for walks and spotting birds and butterflies, and at Rudyard Lake you can try your hand at water sports such as canoeing and sailing, visit the nearby Steam Railway or simply to relax and enjoy a picnic.
A visit to Peak Wildlife Park will be popular with the family, who can hear exotic birds chirp insects buzz, and reptiles hiss from Penguin Heights to Wallaby Wanderland.
