Portsmouth campsites
Hear the call of the sea in Portsmouth, home to an impressive maritime heritage and one-of-a-kind museums. The awe-inspiring galleys of Henry VIII's warship are on display, competing with its impressive neighbours at the Historic Dockyard for your attention, and you've the chance to rise high above the city in the needle-pointed Spinnaker Tower. You won't find yourself all at sea, however, with these welcoming Portsmouth campsites to hand.

Things to do in Portsmouth
One of the largest cities in Hampshire, Portsmouth can be found on England's south coast, with the majority sitting on Portsea Island. That makes it the sole island city in the UK. And just like Treasure Island, there are some real gems to be found. The seafront has a quirky vibe, full of boutique shops selling curios and cafes that'll introduce you to new music and the tastiest seafood you've yet tasted.
Exploring the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will get you started with a taste of the city's immense naval heritage, stretching far back into the mists of time. You won't want to miss magnificent ships such as the enormous 16th century Mary Rose warship and the HMS Victory which was Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar. On board the Victory you can walk the planks and imagine the whoosh of canon balls, as the epic history is told through the eyes of an ordinary sailor. Admire the imposing skyline and get up close and personal with frigates and destroyers on the local harbour tours - just don't forget to wave to the sailors!
Fort Nelson deserves a place on your list, where you can duck and dive along the ramparts or get lost in secret tunnels. Plus, you'll find the entire Royal Armouries national collection of artillery in one place. The D-Day Museum keeps the emotive story of the 1940s alive and Royal Marines Museum is an excellent way to spend a few hours as well.
Visiting the Portsmouth City Museum is a great way to find out about the history of Portsmouth with collections showing the playful seaside era leading up to the 60s, and even way back to the first Anglo Saxons who called it home. Top off that cultural streak with the Portsmouth Natural History Museum, which boasts a resident dinosaur grinning down on you and Charles Dickens' Birthplace where you can uncover the back story behind the great Victorian novelist.
A trip up to the top of Spinnaker Tower will reward you with amazing views of Portsmouth Harbour, and provided you've a head for heights, is as iconic in the city as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Cast your eye over the stunning outline of the Isle of Wight and the south coast, while you're there. If you're in need of a place to unwind after all that excitement, Staunton Park is the spot. There are pits to grill up a BBQ, cycle routes to glide along and a host of cute companions at the Staunton Farm. Southsea Rose Garden has a reputation as a real beauty spot, too, where a walk from the lake will get your nose twitching at the scent of sweet new blooms.
With Portsmouth as your base you can head on to Hayling Island to saunter on its lovely beach, and then explore the cities of Winchester and Chichester. The South Downs National Park and the New Forest National Park will draw you next and after a short ferry trip you'll set foot on the Isle of Wight.
