Things to do in Cirencester
Once a major hub in Roman Britain, today's Cirencester is an attractive Gloucestershire market town with an open square, elegant church and easy access to the central Cotswolds. It's just a quick hop to Bibury, Baunton and much more.
Togas, mosaics, ancient carved curses - it's all on display at the fantastic Corinium Museum. This gem includes a shop and cafe, and even has its own cinema - perfect for taking a load off once you've browsed its collections.
Once you've buffed up your Roman knowledge, put it all to the test at the Cirencester Amphitheatre. Owned by English Heritage, these remains date back to the 2nd century and, in a Roman town smaller only than London at the time, they'd have seen the blood of many a gladiator and up to 8,000 cheering spectators.
Get a little crafty at the New Brewery Arts Centre which hosts a variety of exhibitions and on-site craft makers, or you might like to splash a little cash at the twice weekly farmers market or regular craft market. You'll be joining a real tradition - markets have been held here since the Domesday Book.
Looking to get a spot of adrenaline? The Cotswold Water Park is the place to go for walking and cycling trails as well as watersports, set within beautiful natural surroundings. There's activities for days here with its towns and villages to explore within its expansive 40 square miles and more than 150 serene lakes. One place to make a beeline for is the park's inland paddling beach where the water's packed with inflatables, there are Aquaventure rides and you can even swing from sky high ropes with Vertigo Adventures.
For a few lungfuls of fresh air closer to home, take a walk in Cirencester Park's forest like garden, regularly home to polo competitions, cricket matches and a quirky refreshments trailer serving up tasty bites and hot drinks. Although this estate's lavish grade II building isn't open to the public, the grounds are more than enough to keep you smiling.
Other enticing places to visit nearby include the GwynneSpeed Rally School which will thrill petrolheads looking for fast-paced action, as well as the pretty Cerney House Gardens. For the perfect day trip, hot foot it to Swindon, take a punt on the racecourse at Cheltenham and get out to explore Gloucestershire's lovely countryside.
