Things to do in Exmouth
Visit Exmouth and decide to explore the beach, and you’re bound to find a number of watersports to keep even the most adventurous busy. Try your hand at sailing at the RYA Exe Sailing Club, which is famous for producing world class professional sailors, or enjoy kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, jet skiing, rowing, kayaking and even snorkelling by the beach.
The surrounding countryside offers plenty of great cycling routes along the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, including the Exe Estuary Trail which travels into Exeter, and the East Devon Way, both perfect for joggers and walkers too. The Exmouth to Lymphstone walk or cycle trail will reward you with great views over the estuary.
More rugged walking terrain can be found exploring Aylesbeare Common which is a protected area of woodland and heathland and is renowned for its birds and other interesting wildlife.
Wildlife spotting and fishing boat tours are a great way to see the River Exe, with options to suit families, groups and couples bookable through a number of companies at the town's harbour. The Exe Estuary is one of Exmouth's most notable sights sitting just south of the city centre. Here you can spot wading birds and enjoy spectacular views.
Other more natural attractions include the Dawlish Warren National Nature reserve just across the estuary and great for bird spotting. There are 500 acres of national beauty to take in on its grassland, mudflats and sandspit, while Hawkridge Bird of Prey Centre offers friendly handling and walking experiences.
Kids and adults alike will also love the Exmouth Fun Park, where the outdoor playground includes a zipline, mini race cars suitable for children, zorbing, an assault course and much more. Nearby Sam’s Funhouse - a large indoor soft play centre - is good for wetter days. Likewise Ocean, which has a tenpin bowling alley and arcade attractions, and VertEXE indoor climbing centre.
For something slightly different, A La Ronde is an 18th century and 16-sided house with a very unusual interior. Powderham Castle's grand decorative halls and extensive grounds are suitable for all the family, with excellent guided tours to get all the facts.
Other family friendly activities include the Exmouth museum (which has free entry for kids) and provides a fascinating insight into the history of the area, and World of Country Life which boasts animals, a vintage vehicle collection and a museum of farming and has both indoor and outdoor activities.
Nearby Exeter has a wealth of museums and galleries, extensive dining options, and the famous Exeter Cathedral to visit if you fancy travelling further afield, not to mention Crealy Great Adventure Park and its 60 jaw dropping rides just outside of Clyst St Mary. The peaceful town of Topsham has a great local Saturday market, while Torquay offers a quaint model village with over 400 miniature buildings, and the fascinating cave system at Kents Cavern.
