Things to do in Chester
This large Cheshire city has an extensive history going back to its days as a Roman fort and there is no shortage of things to attract visitors. Come and explore its surroundings steeped in history, stroll its pretty streets and perhaps take an open top bus tour to see it all on another level.
Dating back over 1000 years is a grand cathedral with beautiful stained glass windows - one for the holiday list, for sure - and then you can give yourself a stroll back through time with a walk along Chester's Roman walls. Whether you prefer a 90 minute guided tour, or just a lazy explore by yourself, you'll definitely want to try your luck on the Wishing Steps and snap a few pics of the famous clock on the Eastgate.
Time to go big? Britain's biggest Roman amphitheatre is right here in Chester so have a wander through its tiered areas and picture the roaring crowd.
And if you missed seeing lions and tigers in the stadium, you won't be disappointed at Chester Zoo. It's home to around 400 species of animals, so why not get all a-flutter at the Parrot Breeding Centre, take a lazy boat ride on the river and meet its incredible animal residents, before tucking into some tasty pub grub at The Oakfield.
Fancy a day at the races? Then trot over to Chester Racecourse for plenty of thrills and excitement. Chester's museums are also a great day out, with interesting choices such as the Grosvenor Museum (telling the tale of Chester's history from the Romans until the present day) or soldiering on to a day of fun at the Cheshire Military Museum.
It's not all indoor adventures, however, so why not dabble in exciting kayaking or a walk along the pretty River Dee. There are several picturesque outdoor spaces to explore, too, such as Grosvenor Park and the Chester Roman Gardens. Languishing in style on a boat cruise along the River Dee, you'll be sure to forget the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Looking for what's hot nearby? Take a gander around the stunning Ness Botanic Gardens and dine in their cafe, have a decadent spa experience at Peckforton Castle and spend some time in the fresh air at Tatton Park. The cities of Manchester, Liverpool and Stoke-on-Trent are also great day trip options.
