Things to do on site and in the Liskeard area
Eden Project, the top visitor destination in Cornwall is nestled in a huge crater. Here, massive Biomes housing the largest rainforest in captivity, stunning plants, exhibitions and stories serve as a backdrop to the striking contemporary gardens, summer concerts and exciting year-round family events.
The seaside town of Looe keeps visitors entertained all year round and is still very much a working fishing port.
Start your day early and you can watch the day's catch being auctioned on the quay and pick up some fresh fish for yourself. From the large car parks level streets snake their way to the beach near the town's banjo-shaped pier passing a mix of shops many of which are located in buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Mackerel fishing is a great day out!
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the town hangs off the west side of the Fowey estuary where the large, deep water harbour is a magnet for the yachting crowd. As you walk the ever-narrowing streets of the old town where medieval and Georgian buildings cast shadows over each other, a vibrant maritime history comes to life.
Lining the main Fore Street you will find many small, independent shops. If you're a foodie then Fowey is home to many bistros, cafes and restaurants where you'll find menus offering the best in local produce - Fowey River mussels are a highlight.
Located south of Jamaica Inn, the famous smugglers haunt immortalised by Daphne du Maurier, Colliford is a tranquil lake providing some excellent moorland walks. With ample parking, picnic areas and lakeside walks,
Colliford provides the opportunity for a peaceful day in the countryside. The Nature Reserve is an important site for birdlife including over-wintering wildfowl. The lake offers traditional fly fishing for natural brown trout and is regarded as Cornwall's premier brown trout fishery. Permits are available from The Jamaica Inn.
Siblyback Lake sits on the south-east edge of Bodmin Moor offering a perfect location to enjoy an afternoon. As well as admiring the scenery, you can go windsurfing, sailing and kayaking or if you are a keen fisherman, you can go trout fishing. In addition there is a new cycling and walking path that circumnavigates the lake and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
Golitha Falls are a series of spectacular cascades through a steep-sided valley gorge on the upper reaches of the River Fowey. As the Fowey winds its way from its source on Bodmin Moor to its estuary at the harbour of Fowey it passes through this picturesque wooded gorge between Draynes Bridge and Treverbyn Bridge.
The falls and the ancient woodland through which they flow is a National Nature Reserve of great importance for its lichens, liverwort and mosses. Over 50 species of liverwort grow here and 98 species of moss, some of which are quite rare. The reserve is open all year and is a free admission site.
Situated on the southern side of Bodmin Moor, near the pretty village of St Neot, Carnglaze Slate Caverns is a fascinating place to visit. You can go on an underground tour of the old slate mine, which culminates with the subterranean lake which is a sight to behold. There are also very pretty gardens to wander and the Rum Store which has concerts and special events all year round.
