Experience MTB heaven at BikePark Wales
If you’re mad about mountain biking, BikePark Wales will provide all the biking bliss you could hope for. BikePark Wales is a full scale mountain bike park that caters to riders of all levels, from beginners to professionals. The park is located on the outskirts of Merthyr Tydfil in Gethin Woods. Below you’ll find all the information you need for an adrenaline-filled day out at this amazing park.
Hitting the trails
Whether you’ve been riding mountain bikes for years or are eager to get into the sport, the varied network of trails offered at BikePark Wales ensures there’s always a trail that’s just right for you. The family and beginner trails are perfect for people just starting out with mountain biking, though the ability to ride a bike is required in order to access the trails. More confidant riders can enjoy the intermediate and advanced trails, while very experienced riders can get their hearts racing on the expert and pro trails. The trails vary in steepness and the type and frequency of obstacles that riders will encounter. BikePark Wales has a dedicated team who maintain the existing trails and construct new ones so riders can be assured of top-notch action.
Enjoying the convenience of the uplift service
The park provides an uplift service courtesy of mini buses and trailers that will transport riders and their bikes to the top of the mountain. A day pass for the uplift costs £30 (which includes the £5 entry fee to the park). Riders may also be able to utilise the uplift if there are available spaces for a £4 charge per trip, though day pass holders have priority. Thursday summer evening passes are also available from May to mid-August for £17.50. Riders who do not want mini bus lifts can cycle to the top of the mountain at any time via a singletrack trail, provided they have paid the park’s £5 day pass entry fee.
Bike hire at the park
If you don’t have a bike of your own or don’t want the hassle of bringing your own bike with you, that’s not a problem at BikePark Wales. The MTB park has partnered with Trek to provide a bike hire service catering to adults and children of all riding experience levels. There are bikes to suit male and female riders and a choice of bike sizes are available. Hiring bikes that are suitable for the beginner trails starts at £15 for half a day’s use, while bikes that are suitable for the other trails start at £40 for half a day’s hire. Kid-friendly bikes for youngsters aged 6 to 10 years old start at £10 for half a day’s hire. The park recommends booking a bike in advance to ensure there is one available for you on the day of your visit.
Other facilities at the park
BikePark Wales has a bike shop that sells a range of bikes, parts, accessories and clothing. In addition to a variety of equipment for sale, there is also an onsite workshop that riders can make use of which provides bike repair and upgrade services.
All that hard-core cycling is tiring work but the park also has a café for boosting sagging energy levels. The café offers a variety of breakfast and lunch options as well as a selection of cakes for sweet-toothed riders.
