Everything you need to know about horse riding in Kent

Forget horsing around on your holidays, horse riding is a brilliant way to explore the magnificent landscapes that Kent has to offer. It's a fun activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family, couples, friends or those holidaying solo.

Popular routes suitable for all levels of riding experience

The picturesque area of Lower Hardres in the Kent Downs just outside of Canterbury is an ideal place to enjoy horse riding. There are a number of public bridleways as well as lovely woodland and parkland areas that offer the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife such as squirrels, foxes, birds and rabbits. Bedgebury Forest also offers stunning riding routes in a beautiful woodland area with striking trees and wildlife, with a number of public bridleways and toll rides providing a great day out.

Choosing the best time of year to go horse riding

Spring and summer are likely to prove the best time of year to ride as you can avoid cold temperatures and hard grounds. If you do choose to ride during the colder months, you should ensure that suitable warm clothing is worn, including hats and gloves and warm waterproof jackets. Avoid riding in the fog, dark or when the light is fading.

Some do’s and don’ts for horse riding in Kent

There are some general rules of conduct that should be observed when horse riding in Kent. Ride on the left side of the road, even when you are getting ready to turn right. Make sure you use clear hand signals and be aware of and polite to other road users. Don’t ride more than two abreast and avoid main roads whenever you are able to as these can become very busy. Wear fluorescent clothing that offers high visibility, as well as a suitable protective hat. It is advisable to have a mobile phone with you so you can contact someone if an emergency occurs. You should also tell someone what route you are taking and when you think you will be back.

Superb stables for adults and children

Wellgrove Farm Stables offers horse riding as well as a pony club near Tunbridge Wells. These stables are suitable for adults and children alike, accommodating children as young as three years old. The stables provide safety equipment including riding hats, boots and back protectors if needed. Beginner riders are advised to wear comfy tracksuit trousers. Riding Farm Equestrian Centre in Hildenborough is suitable for adults and children three years and older. The centre provides riding hats and suggests you wear long trousers and shoes or boots that have a low, flat heel. Bursted Manor in Canterbury offers riding lessons and a pony club for adults and children five years and older. All of these stables are approved by the British Horse Society.

Nearby attractions that can be experienced on horseback

There are a great range of attractions to ride to within Kent. Between 1804 and 1809, the Royal Military Canal in Hythe was an important defense against Napoleon.
