Camping here is at the foot of Winshields Crag, along stunning Hadrian's Wall - and if you've challenged yourself to walk its length or cycle the route, you'll find this an excellent stopover.

There are many other paths that will draw you in their pretty wooden footpath signs, dry stone walls and extravagant views.

The Sill National Visitor Centre is based in the same village as the site, with exhibitions on this dazzling landscape and a tasty cafe for your rumbling tummy.

Climbing is possible, both under the Roman Wall and on the southern cliffs. For urban days out, just drive over to Carlisle and Newcastle.
