About Wolf Meadows Farm

This peaceful farm close to Umberleigh offers 30 acres of lush meadows and woodland, where a blend of traditional farming methods and sustainability are in place - and the environmentally friendly vibe is strong. Wolf Meadows is bordered by flower and berry filled hedgerows and ancient woodland - perfect for getting back to nature. It plays host to rare and endangered Highland cattle, a proud cockerel and hens which lay the best free range eggs for your brekkie. All pitches are without electric. Choose to spread out in acres of expansive meadow, bounded by the River Taw. There are a limited number of riverside meadow pitches, where you can hear the gentle flow of the clear water. It's home to ducks, geese, salmon and perhaps even swans. A small section of exclusive wild bluebell woodland also offers space to pop your tent. Shy deer can sometimes be seen and there's plenty of other wildlife and wildflowers. Just three pitches are within the section of woodland that stretches down to the river bank and from this base you might paddle in the water, watch an otter go about its day or go to sleep listening to gentle bird calls. The site is also home to two eco friendly and Viking-inspired glamping barrel pods. Sleeping four with two double bedrooms, both enjoy their own secluded spot on the site with shared facilities in easy reach and outdoor BBQ area for campfires. You can also enjoy a stay in one of the two Eco Lodges. Also sleeping up to four, the pod comes with a double bed, futon bed and bedding. It is the perfect choice if you want to enjoy some al fresco cooking with an outdoor kitchen, BBQ area and picnic bench. Please note, the site is accessed by a tight narrow bend but the staff are always on hand to help you get in if needed.

Wolf Meadows Farm is open from 15/04 to 29/09.

A note from the site themselves...

The farm is owned by ecologists couple who are passionate about the outstanding wildlife the farm supports. Their priority is to conserve and enhance the farm for nature, and grazing livestock is integral to this goal.

Managed organically (without the use of artificial pesticides, fertilisers and other chemicals), the grassland is grazed by a herd of rare and endangered cattle, it is nestled within a private stretch of the idyllic Taw river within the truly enchanting valley full of wildlife, set in the beautiful North Devon countryside.

Traditionally managed, flower-rich meadows bordered by dense berry and flower-filled hedgerows and ancient woodland. Be inspired by nature, reconnect, be happy, sleep, and fall in love. Turn off your phone and savour the quiet. Rise with the sun, marvel at the dawn chorus, awaken your senses and feel revived to backpedal, muse, and wonder.

At dusk, bats fly overhead and owls can be heard calling across the river, which itself is home to not only salmon but warblers, curlews, egrets, otter, geese, ducks and swans....

Medium Tent - Non Electric Meadow Riverside PitchesJul 2024

I was expecting 'almost wild camping' to be just that - peace and quiet. I was very disappointed that John rides around all day either in his 4x4 or a large quad bike so no peace and tranquillity. The pics could be updated as it is all very overgrown with limited access to the river. We were allocated pitch 1 closest to the railway bridge which was okay, but its a long trek to the toilet. Did not feel particularly eco friendly, no recycling or bins, we were told to take our rubbish out on departure but no instructions where exactly, so left it by an overflowing, unaccessible commercial bin. Behind the commercial bin was a disused lorry trailer, which appeared to be full of rubbish. Continuing on way out is a very small metal pen, home to a very large pig.

Is the best place I have ever been

Small Tent - Non Electric Meadow Riverside PitchesJun 2024

This is the finest campsite I have ever experienced in the UK. Although our stay was brief—merely two nights—it exceeded my highest expectations. The farmer, a kind and generous soul, gifted us fresh eggs from his hens. The river, crystal clear and teeming with trout, enhanced our sense of seclusion, making it feel almost like wild camping. The facilities were immaculate, with spotless, well-maintained toilets, a hot shower, and a dedicated area for washing dishes. This campsite strikes the perfect balance between wilderness and safety. For animal lovers, it is an ideal retreat, offering the opportunity to camp near cows within a fenced area and to enjoy the presence of other farm animals as well..

Much needed stay in a great place

Sprinter-Type Campervan - Non Electric Meadow Riverside PitchesApr 2024

A great rustic location with cattle, birds and more. Great communication. John was a pleasure to meet and is working hard to create something that also has so much potential that I'm actually jealous. I wish him all the luck in the world. There is a lovely pub in High Bickington for Sunday lunch - a must, and its a lovely walk! Hope to come back one day soon and enjoy the camp fire, BBQ, river, cows and tranquillity. The trains that go past very occasionally must have been jealous as I waved them on to whatever less perfect destination they were on their way to. Keep going John! You have a gem of an opportunity in your hands. See you soon!
