A note from the site themselves...

Parkgate Farm has had a campsite for a long time run by the Watson family for two generations. We became involved in 2016 when, due to ill health, our friend Peter Watson was struggling to manage it himself. We worked together to build on what his parents had started years ago - a magical little corner of the Lake District for all to enjoy.

Peter was a real character and after his passing in 2020, we have made it our mission to keep that special character alive. Not too many rules and regulations, we just ask that all our guests respect one another and us so we can all continue to enjoy the beauty and peaceful space that Parkgate offers.

We share this idyllic place with a great deal of wildlife so please let us know what you spot during your stay with us, Rachel

Camping Pod - Camping Pod (Dog Friendly)Nov 2024

This is the second time we have used this pod. We used it this time, as last year, for a visit to Workington on the Saturday. It is also situated quite close to Ravenglass and we paid a visit to the railway on our way home. The facilities on site are excellent and very clean. It is quite a small pod, so two or three nights is probably enough, but we were very comfortable and warm. I was with my brother, who is almost seventy, (we had been to a football match when our local team were playing Workington) and he found the high step to get in and out of the pod a bit difficult. He did manage though and we enjoyed our stay. The who stayed section does not really cover us, so I have gone for the nearest, as I cannot post the review without it.

Single Axle Caravan - Medium Electric Grass PitchesOct 2024

The campsite was very clean, well kept and had the most amazing views. The site wardens, Bruce and Sandy were absolute angels, they were very accommodating and effective communicators. We're most definitely visiting again before the end of the year. A nice little getaway from the hustle and bustle of the West Midlands.

Welcoming and relaxing

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesOct 2024

The facilities were exceptionally clean, the hosts were very welcoming and helpful. We were very unfortunate with the weather, arriving just before a storm. The hosts were thoughtful and offered us a less exposed pitch, which we were very grateful for.

There are many local walks along paths, bridleways and forestry tracks both low level and leading up onto the fells. Or you can get in your car and drive up to Wasdale Head (about 25 minutes) and walk on the high fells including England's highest - Scafell Pike.

Also in Wasdale is England's smallest Church (St Olaf's at Wasdale Head) and England's deepest lake - Wastwater (20 minutes). Wastwater is brilliant for canoeing/kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming (brrr) and West Lakes Adventures can be booked to take you on many guided activities.

Drigg beach is a ten minute drive and offers miles of golden sands and sand dunes which are a SSSI nature reserve, home to the rare Natterjack Toad. A great place for a full day out, a BBQ on the beach or a sunset stroll.

Other nearby attractions:

  • Muncaster Castle (10 minutes)
  • Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway (10 minutes)
  • Eskdale Golf Course (15 minutes)
  • Stanley Ghyll Waterfall (20 minutes)
  • Hardknott Roman Fort and Thermae (25 minutes)
