About Low Greenside Farm Campsite

At the foot of the Howgill Fells in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this site is perfect for a relaxed camping or glamping holiday for couples, families or friends. This beautiful, quiet, unspoiled area is ideal for exploring the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District - but with none of their hustle and bustle. It is an eco friendly site where everything is designed to be sustainable without sacrificing looks, comfort or utility. Well designed, low impact buildings house attractive, family size shower rooms with walk-in showers, and modern water saving toilets. Large areas of grass are kept long for wildlife and children, and there is a programme of planting native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. The owners are proud to have a Silver Award from the Green Tourism Scheme. Large pitches for tents and three campervan pitches are positioned around the edges of a very spacious field, making room for everyone to enjoy in peace. The site is justly proud that many visitors return year after year or several times a year. After a day out exploring, return home to a peaceful campsite to relax and enjoy life's simple pleasures. The friendly sheep are very happy to be fed bits of bread and will come trotting over when they see you. If you're lucky, you'll see a red squirrel popping along the drystone walls. Wander down to one of the two village pubs or light your campfire and watch the sunset, toast your marshmallows and wait for the stars to come out in an inky black sky. The campsite is in an International Dark Skies Reserve and is a Dark Sky Business. In an adjacent field, there are two options for glampers - Far Field Yurt for couples or families, and Green Bell Tent for couples only. Both offer the chance to relax in peace and comfort while surrounded by nature! What could be better? The yurt and bell tent each have their own private cooking facilities, bijou private composting toilet, and a garden with campfire and BBQ, lovely double hammock, picnic table and seating. Plenty of space for quiet contemplation of the gorgeous views as well as running wild and playing games. All glamping is off-grid and solar powered. Far Field Yurt is fully insulated and beautifully equipped for couples or families. The yurt is framed by a little woodland, its own garden and a meadow in front. Inside is light and spacious, with large windows and a clear central roof dome for stargazing. Furnished with a wood burning stove to keep you toasty warm, handmade and vintage furniture, and comfy modern beds. The yurt's kitchen hut is equipped to cook proper meals for up to five people. Like the yurt, Green Bell Tent is spacious, comfy, and very private. With a double bed, cosy furnishings, and cooking facilities to make a great fry-up or camp meal for two. Outside is the woodland, garden with meadow in front, campfire/BBQ, picnic table, seating, and comfy double hammock. Either camping or glamping, Low Greenside is equally perfect for romantic getaways or family holidays.

Pitches and the yurt are available from 10th April, the bell tent from the start of May. The site closes mid September.

A note from the site themselves...

We love living here and running our campsite. We get the nicest people coming to stay - quietly sociable and considerate of fellow campers - and they make it a delight. Magnus is the second generation running the business and took to it like a duck to water. We enjoy making it all work well, meeting everyone, and seeing our guests having a happy time.

We're very pleased to have achieved a Silver Award for Green Tourism. The Award highlights how we take care of and enhance the natural environment by creating better spaces for nature to flourish, what we do to reduce our impact on the climate, and how we support local businesses, and ethical suppliers.

We also support a charity in Malawi that helps subsistence farmers to increase food production and soil health through organic farming.

Our priority is providing a well-managed, clean and beautiful place for our visitors to relax in and enjoy our lovely countryside.

It's a simple recipe made with good ingredients. By sticking to our values, we've been able to create a campsite we're proud of and it's a joy to see our visitors enjoy it and return year after year.

Visitors here like to enjoy quiet between 10:30pm and 8:30am. Recorded music and radios aren't allowed at any time - but if you want to bring your guitar and have a play, you're more than welcome!

Yes, all are free of charge.

There's plenty to see and do in this lovely corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with pretty villages and interesting market towns to explore, lots of nice little shops and cafes with friendly people running them. You'll find the roads quiet and walking very peaceful.

There's a great choice of long or short walks from your tent door. The campsite offers a useful walking guide - Nine Great Walks from Low Greenside (£3). Smardale Ghyll Nature Reserve is a favourite walk from the farm, crossing a big old railway viaduct - see massive lime kilns, lots of wildflowers and rare butterflies.

Other circular walks from the farm are via one of the two village pubs, all through beautiful limestone countryside. You can also walk straight out to the Howgill Fells and go for miles with only sheep and ponies for company.

Pretty Ravenstonedale village is a 10 minute stroll away. The Black Swan and The King's Head both serve excellent food (including breakfasts if you're feeling indulgent) and real ales.

There's a lovely, informal, and inexpensive 9-18 hole golf course (clubs available free of charge at the campsite), a public tennis court (bring a racquet), children's playground, interesting church with monastic ruins, and an art gallery. Catch a vintage bus from Ravenstonedale to visit Kendal or Barnard Castle on weekly market days.

Nearby you can hire bicycles, go pony trekking across the fells, or try trout fishing - catch one and BBQ it later!

In Kirkby Stephen (5 miles), you can shop locally for everything you're likely to need. There are lots of cafes and small shops to explore as well as a supermarket. Visit the little railway museum free of charge and ride on a steam train.

Follow the Poetry Path along an extraordinary and beautiful stretch of the River Eden. Ride on the scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway from Kirkby Stephen for a day out to Settle, Appleby or Dentdale.

The Eden Valley is lovely to explore, with quiet roads, pretty villages, small attractions, and unspoiled and varied countryside. Appleby and Sedbergh are both nearby and worth visiting. Far Field Mill Arts and Heritage Centre near Sedbergh is a place to stop for tea on a return trip from Hawes where there is lots to see and do.
