A note from the site themselves...

The site is situated in the Cannock Chase AONB and in close proximity to a SSSI/SAC site.

We ask our visitors to respect the conservation area by keeping dogs on leads within that area especially during the summer months when there are ground nesting nightjar and woodcock and risk to your dog of adder bite. When out walking you are advised to keep to main pathways rather than rambling across the heath.

The fallow deer also have their fawns in June and conceal them in the undergrowth for the first few days. We provide bird feeding stations and have an abundant and varied bird population.

Usual site rules - dogs on leads and under control at all times, no ball games on site, no fire pits. Visitors are allowed within reason.

BBQs are allowed provided they are raised from the grass surface or on the hardcore but no open flame fires are allowed anywhere on Cannock Chase.

The site doesn't offer on-site activities but you are welcome to create your own - such as rustling up a BBQ dinner under a starry sky.

Or you can simply enjoy what Cannock Chase has to offer - miles of walking or cycling without the need to travel away from the site to start your adventure.

There are two visitor centres on the Chase, from the County Council and Forestry Commission - they'll help point you to where you can swing through the trees with Go Ape or hire a bike to explore further.

This is an area touched by an everlasting memory of the Great War, with the German and Commonwealth Cannock Chase Military Cemeteries, the Katyn Memorial and lots of WW1 archaeology. Information is available in the information centre relating to 1914-1918 war camps.

The site is actually situated on the Rugeley camp area. The CC visitor centre is located on the old RAF Hednesford site at the top of Kitbag Hill.

Cannock Chase coalfield has a rich mining history too, with the last coal mines closing in the 90s, and you can uncover it all at the Museum of Cannock Chase.

Other great attractions nearby include:

  • Lichfield Cathedral
  • Garrick Theatre
  • The Monkey Forest
  • Trentham Gardens
  • Churnet Valley Railway
  • Shugborough Estate (National Trust)
  • National Memorial Arboretum
  • RAF Cosford Museum
