Really enjoyed our stay at Bales Ash Campsite. The team were very friendly and helpful, even down to detouring us due to road closure on our way down. The views were lovely with plenty of places to walk. Facilities were very clean and welcoming. It was my first time camping on my own, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely be back.

The staff at this campsite are fantastic, I am disabled and struggle with walking, I asked if it was possible to be closer to facilities. Debbie arranged it all, we were camping with friends who didn't need to have electricity. We on the other hand were in a caravan and needed electricity. Debbie put us next to each other and had arranged for a shower stool for me whilst ensuring I didn't have to walk far to the facilities. Nothing is too much trouble with great friendly staff. If you don't mind compostable toilets this is the place for you. The pitches are well spaced apart ensuring that there is plenty of room. Our dogs were happy here as there was plenty of room for them to explore and they could be dogs (we knew they were welcome and an odd bark didn't upset anyone). This is definitely an eco site and if we had read the sites write up, we wouldn't have used our own facilities as there is no chemical waste facility. We will definitely be back at some point. Thank you Debbie and staff for making our stay enjoyable

Loved the site and the staff were very helpful. Shower block and recycling facilities all clean and tidy. We booked a pitch with a 'private toilet', which was actually a portaloo. I have been to sites advertising private toilets before and you get a proper toilet but other than that, we had a wonderful time, despite the weather.
A lovely rural campsite

A lovely, quiet campsite set in a rural location. Staff were really friendly and the facilities were generally good with large pitches. The only negative was the compost toilet, which I'm afraid didn't suit us. Other than that it was a lovely stay in the countryside.
Site's response
Ah, we're really sorry that you didn't like our funky compost separator toilets, they are so much better for the environment and they don't smell like the old fashioned ones because they are separators. Most people find they prefer them to portaloos but you can always book a private portaloo to be right next to your pitch should you ever want to return. Thanks for staying with us.
Perfect!

We booked the Shepherd's Hut as a last minute stayover with our 2 dogs and we are so glad we did. We were greeted upon arrival by Debbie, who showed us around the facilities and explained everything. Wood and firelighters were available to purchase, and there was a small shop, so we bought some fresh eggs. The hut was beautiful, really clean and welcoming and it had everything we needed. We paid extra to have the bedding made up, the bed was so comfortable - it was one of the best sleeps we have ever had. The site hadn't fully opened for the summer, so we had the whole field to ourselves, but even in high season I don't imagine it would feel crowded. The area is quite remote, the nearest shop was a 10 min drive and very expensive so I would take everything you need with you. Debbie recommended some pubs to us, but we didn't try them. We were lucky to have good weather so we used the barbeque and sat by the firepit all evening watching the stars and toasting marshmallows. We would definitely return to Bales Ash!

We'd be very happy to have you back anytime. There are well priced supermarkets, local shops and pannier Markets in South Molton, Barnstaple and Torrington who will all deliver to the campsite.

Shepherd's Hut was warm, fully equipped with a king size bed and all you could need in the kitchen. Bright, cheerful, clean and comfortable. Outside recliners, chairs and table, picnic table, fire pit, BBQ all enclosed in its own fenced off area. Highly recommend. Debbie was extremely helpful, thank you.

We had a lovely weekend getaway. Was a good location to travel to the beach and more! I loved how the beech hut cabin was hidden away, it made celebrating our 3 year anniversary romantic. I would definitely recommend.

Bales Ash is a friendly and welcoming site. The little shop is useful for essentials and offers some very welcome treats! The showers and laundry facilities are very clean and there is plenty of hot water! The compost loos are not to everyone's liking but as long as you follow the (very clear) instructions they're fine. We were there on one of the hottest weekends of the year and could have done with more shade. Good value for money. Pubs for food, are in easy reach in a car or a good walk.

We booked to stay here last minute and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We were showed around the site and everything was explained to us in regards to our stay. They have an on-site shop which has a great selection of food including vegetarian food and freshly baked cakes. The showers were clean and there was even a tub for babies to use. The toilets were compostable toilets with the option to use a portaloo if you didn't like the compostable idea. They also had fire pits which you could hire to have your own fire. I would definitely recommend staying here.

I stayed here with my daughters and had a great time. The check-in and little shop are all cheerily painted and every one of the staff were super friendly. There are compostable toilets which were also really cheery. You could hire a private portaloo on your pitch, but we all got on fine with the compostable ones. Loads of hot water in the showers. Would love to go back.
