Set on the coast of South Devon, High Nature Centre is a eco-campsite offering luxury yurts, bell tents and grass pitches for tents and campervans. Once a thriving market garden, the owners have converted some unused polytunnels into multi-functional spaces for dining, yoga, games, foraging and nature courses, catering for all ages and interests. Gara Rock beach is a short stroll away and Salcombe is just across the harbour.

Why you'll love it at The High Nature Centre

About the site

Dedicated to eco-tourism, ecological education and regenerative culture, this site is the perfect spot for friends and families looking to reconnect with nature and learn about sustainable living. Nestled between East Prawle and East Portlemouth villages, the site is a short stroll away from the South West Coast Path and Gara Rock beach. Whether you're travelling with a tent or tourer, there's a perfect pitch for all. At the front of the meadow you'll find two grass pitches for tents only, catching the best of the golden hour light. Nearby, you'll also find three meadow pitches suitable for small campervans and tents, a short walk from the showers and toilets. During off-peak times, one of the three touring pitches is transformed into a bell tent camp. Designed like a mini eco village around a central campfire, the bell tents are comfortably furnished with zipped in groundsheets. Take your pick of the 5m, 4m or 3m bell tent. All tents contain carpeted floor, comfy mattresses, simple furnishings and lighting. Please note that bedding is not included but can be provided for an extra charge. If you're looking for something more robust, there are five yurts of varying sizes to choose from. Primrose and Celandine are the largest of the yurts, measuring 20ft and sleeping five comfortably. Both yurts are fitted with a king size bed and three singles. The slightly smaller Bluebell and Campion yurts measure 18ft and sleep four people, fitted with one double bed and two single beds. Last but not least is the Thrift yurt, measuring 16ft and sleeping three people across one double bed and one single. All yurts are fitted with a wood-burning stove, lighting and soft furnishings. Outside, you'll find a picnic bench and a private mobile kitchen unit. This unit includes a sturdy workbench, cast iron gas hobs (gas included), sink, cool box, water butt, food storage areas, crockery and cooking equipment. If you're cooking up a feast, there's also a large camp kitchen for yurt guests only. This kitchen is equipped by gas hobs, a grill, two ovens, fridges, a small freezer, storage cupboards, washing up facilities, pots, pans, crockery and more. If you forget to bring bedding, beautiful hand-block printed bed linen packs imported from Jaipur are available to hire for an extra charge. As well as being a successful campsite, the site also acts as a dynamic hub for ecological and social inclusivity, focusing on eco-glamping, permaculture, organic farming, well-being, nature connection, rewilding and community outreach. The owners have converted unused polytunnels into multi-functional spaces where they hold dining events with guest chefs and activities like yoga, foraging, and courses and retreats. If you can bring yourself to leave the sanctity of the site, there are plenty of excellent day trip options nearby, such as catching the regular ferry to charming Salcombe. Well behaved pets are more than welcome and campfires are permitted in the fire pits provided.

A note from the site themselves...

Founded in 2009 by Permaculture Designers Catherine Middleditch, High Nature began its journey on the grounds of Wayfield Nurseries. Initially a plant nursery with a rich history of cultivating cauliflowers and cut flowers, the land was lovingly tended by a local woman affectionately known as 'Green Jane,' who grew exquisite organic fruits and vegetables for the community.

Over the past decade, guided by permaculture ethics and principles, the land has evolved into a diverse sanctuary for eco-tourism, organic farming, well-being activities, nature connection, rewilding, and community outreach.

Today, High Nature is managed by Catherine, Tobdan, and their daughter Tanzen-Zangmo, continuing the legacy of sustainable living, connection to the land and a passion for Nature.
