About Hazel Mount Fellside

Get back to nature at this eco friendly, off-grid campsite. On the boundary of the Lake District National Park, the site is nestled between glorious beaches and picturesque walking country, the best of both worlds! Three smaller pitches, Foxglove, Snowdrop and Bluebell are spaced among wildflowers and trees. Each of these pitches welcome smaller tents and up to three guests. Bluebell is the most secluded and has the perk of being shaded during the day by nearby trees. Due to its location, this is the only pitch where BBQs and fire pits are not allowed. For families and groups of up to four, Primrose pitch allows a large family tent or a few smaller ones together, with stunning views over the estuary and Black Combe. Larger groups of up to eight can hire Daisy Camp. This spacious large grass pitch sits at the front of the site with wonderful panoramic estuary views and a private kitchen area with a sunken fire pit. Up to eight guests can pitch up here, with multiple tents allowed. A large BBQ and smoker can be hired if you wish to take your outdoor cooking to the next level. If you want the whole place to yourself, Hazel Mount Fellside also welcomes exclusive site hire, allowing up to 20 guests at a time. The site has the environment and local wildlife at its forefront. The site is designed to not affect its surroundings, but this does mean the terrain can be a little wild so be sure to pack trainers or walking boots. BBQs and fire pits are available to hire onsite, perfect for a spot of al fresco cooking. Great for toasting marshmallows and just taking in the breathtaking views while waiting to enjoy the night sky. Dogs are allowed too, with plenty of walking routes for you and your four-legged friends.

Hazel Mount is open for the weekend of 12th April, from 24th May to June 2nd and then from 17th July to 1st September.

Facilities and amenities

Site facilities include two compost loos and portable solar showers on request (please note these will only work if the sun shines). Extra loos are installed when the site is fully booked. Bottled drinking water is supplied for the first night, with tap water freely available for washing and cleaning.

There is a small lending library stocked with items such as games, blankets and some extras, that campers are welcome to borrow during their stay. Please note, there are no bins on site but there is a small recycling station to lighten your load.

For picking up any essentials, Tesco in Millom is ten minutes drive away or explore the handful of local shops in Broughton in Furness. The nearest pub is The Punch Bowl Inn, a 30 minute walk or a few minutes drive away.

A note from the site themselves...

I'm an ecologist by profession and bought this gorgeous plot of land as it had not been intensely farmed. As such it had retained a good amount of biodiversity and was relatively unspoiled. My vision is that my land management enhances this diversity and enables nature to thrive here. I'm happy to share my private little plot of paradise with like-minded, nature loving campers.

The grassy pitches are generously spaced to allow room for wildflowers, invertebrates and visiting birds, whilst also providing guests their own little bubble of paradise during their stay: it's certainly not your typical campsite. If you wish to learn more during your visit as to why Hazel Mount Fellside is so special, please request a personal tour.

During the summer months, the site is grazed by a flock of Hebridean sheep who will happily munch away between the pitches. I look forward to welcoming you to my little plot of paradise, Ruth

Medium Tent - Small Non Electric Grass Pitch (Bluebell)Aug 2024

What a lovely little, quirky find this site is. With everything you need and nothing that you don't, we had a sheltered and secluded pitch (bluebell), with views of the coast while being in easy reach of lakeland swims and walks. It's restored my faith in camping as an escape and we hope to be able to return (maybe even in better weather, but that's half the fun). Ruth is a great host, on hand personally or by phone, the cute wee loos are clean and the supply cupboard is a fabulous idea. She's having a good go at providing something a little bit different and we wish her every success. Well recommended.

Absolutely wonderful

Small Tent - Small Non Electric Grass Pitch (Foxglove)Aug 2024

Such a lovely stay, truly a beautiful site and Ruth was such a wonderful host who made sure we were comfortable. It was peaceful and great for dogs. As it's off grid completely, not a campsite for those who like their home comforts, but it was absolutely perfect for us and the dog and the views are incredible, even with the mediocre weather we had. Definitely worth a visit!

Site's response

Thank you for leaving a lovely review Megan. Glad you enjoyed your stay and the weather didn't dampen your spirits. Until next time, all the very best, Ruth ☺️

Small Tent - Small Non Electric Grass Pitch (Foxglove)Jul 2023

Amazing view in every direction just from the tent, it was easy to find and the owner was very nice and helpful, plus the sheep are very cute :)

Site's response

Thank you for leaving a lovely review, Miriam. So glad you enjoyed your stay at my little plot of paradise. The sheep are cute but hopefully I'll have cuteness overload soon with some chicks - my gorgeous little hen Pumpkin is currently sitting on a clutch. You'll have to come back and see for yourself. Until then, all the very best, Ruth
