About Westdown Farm Wild Camping and Caravanning Certificated Site

Priding itself on taking care of the environment and is ideal for solo travellers or families. You'll find three areas to choose from, with each one catering to the type of camping experience you want. The wild camping area is designed for smaller scale tents, with no access to the 'mystery woods' with vehicles. Instead, simply park your car a short distance away from your tent and use the wheelbarrow provided to transfer your gear (or your back for a real wild camping experience). The traditional camping area, 'sunset view' is set in a secure half acre field and holds up to five tents, caravans, motorhomes or vans at one time. There are no designated pitches in the area as the site operates on a 'choose where you want to pitch' basis. Raised fire pits are allowed or you can hire one from the site. For a touch of luxury, there is also a range of woodland glamping huts - all with their own fire pit! Sleeping up to two and including a king sized bed, these make for a perfect couples retreat within the secluded woodland. All bedding provided. Dogs are allowed in the traditional camping area only.

Westdown Farm Wild Camping and Caravanning Certificated Site is open from 28/03 to 30/09.

A note from the site themselves...

We made the move here back in 2005. In 2016, we opened our gates to wild campers and caravanners who share our passion for being in the outdoors. There are now three generations of us who live here along with our mix of Longhorn cattle, Herwick sheep, horses, goats, chickens and dogs. We have worked hard to make Westdown Farm a haven for both people and wildlife.

Since opening, we have made many changes including installing nature ponds, planting hundreds of saplings and taking an organic approach to our farming, raising only rare-breed livestock.

We work closely with the Devon Wildlife Trust, and our farm has been the focus of numerous wildlife surveys. From these surveys, we have learnt that our farm is home to long-eared bats, pipistrelle and at least 34 different species of native butterflies!

Our campsite has grown quickly since opening in 2016. We have a real sense of 'field to fork' when it comes to the food we produce here on-site. If you aren't shy of getting your hands dirty, just speak to Farmer Dick or Stacey who will take you on a farm tour.

We can't wait to meet you and hope that you enjoy Westdown Farm as much as we do!

Small Tent - Mystery Woods Camping PitchesJul 2024

Our stay at Westdown Farm was absolutely amazing. From warm and welcoming hosts, to lush country side views and, of course, the lambs! We opted for the option to wild camp and we were not disappointed. After being met by our host, Richard, he provided us with a wheelbarrow to transport our things to the wild camping site, and gave us great tips about the best places to pitch a tent. We were left to our own devices, which is a key element of wild camping and if we needed to contact our hosts for any reason, they were always available to help with no qualms. The privacy of being left to "do our own thing" was very much welcomed and allowed us to relax and decompress uninterrupted. Once settled into our new home for the next 5 days, we sat and enjoyed the silence, only broken by the occasional mooing of a cow or bird song. The facilities at the farm were great with amazingly clean composting toilets, with detailed instructions in order to keep them stink free, which they definitely were! Furthermore, the shower blocks were immaculate with hot water and great water pressure, which is very welcome in the uncertain weather that British summertime brings. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side and on the last night, we opted to stay in one of the glamping pods, which our hosts were more than happy to do. Luckily there was one available! These too were extremely clean and cosy, giving us a chance to hide from the rain, and to recharge our phones via USB sockets. The farm is located very close to towns, National Trust sites and beaches that are only a 40 minute drive away. On these drives, you pass through little towns with a lot of history, whilst also being able to take in the incredible views of the lush British countryside. Overall, our stay at Westdown Farm was amazing and we couldn't recommend it highly enough for those that want to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to recharge and reconnect with nature.

Small Tent - Mystery Woods Camping PitchesJun 2024

We had the tent area to ourselves. Car and tent side by side - loved it! Great, well thought out facilities compost toilets (suitable for the beginner), great showers and recycle centre. In the AM, I called to see if I could purchase eggs (and some bacon) which he had, thank you! Great, environmentally sensitive camping! P.S. bring ear plugs as the neighbours cows were noisy.

VW-Type Campervan - Sunset View Camping PitchesSep 2023

Great location with plenty of space to set up anything you need and have a campfire (pits already provided for free) so take plenty of wood. This is a quiet place with great views and great recycling credentials. Bathroom and washing facilities close by and compostable toilets. Plenty of walks for your four legged friends and children so don't be put off by lack of electric hook-up points, as this is a gem of a site.
