Vessons Camping has just 25 private and well spaced pitches within 80 acres of Shropshire countryside. It's the perfect welcoming place to relax - with a laidback approach and few rules. Neighbours are far away and unlikely to bother you! Lovely country views are available from this base in the Shropshire Hills and it's only 30 mins drive to Shrewsbury or an hour to charming Ludlow. Pub within a five minute drive, too.

Bad camping experience

Don't know where to start with this experience. For the camping site itself, I can't complain, although the lack of communication with the host and his guests was not good. Instructions were unclear on where to go, which led to us ending up in the wrong field, but was correct by the instructions given. Once gaining signal, we called Nigel, to which we were appalled by his manners. We informed him that we got stuck in the mud to which he replied, "not much I can do about that, I'm not there" We were left utterly speechless. Rudest man ever! Don't recommend and will not be coming back.

Really beautiful surroundings, not packed in like sardines, owner was helpful on the phone. My only downside is the lack of showers but I can't let that mark the score down as it is well advertised as having no shower block. Very basic, but if that's what you are looking for, then it's perfect.

Its a great location and very spacious with great views and beautiful horses next door. Facilities wise, it is quite limited, but fine if you don't need things like washing up facilities, showers etc. I felt in good connection with the owner who was responsive and helpful. The arriving directions could I think be a bit clearer. As a priority, access to the field involved going over a hump in the ground that both times scraped the bottom of my car. You would be fine in a 4x4 or larger vehicle, but this really does need addressing to avoid cars being damaged. If this can be resolved, I recommend coming here.
Site's response
Thank you Russell for your kind remarks and confirm the bump you mentioned was put there to divert water from the recent Monsoon rain showers, it has been removed.

The site was perfectly positioned for panoramic views every which way. Gorgeous woods attached for exploring with my little one. Nigel was incredibly helpful and at hand for anything. The site was considerate for keeping campers at a respectful distance for a wild off grid feel. The portaloo's near were clean and efficient. Very friendly horses in neighbouring fields. Great first camping experience for a curious 4 year old, safe and secluded.

Amazing campsite, the most spectacular views from your tent. Land maintained really well, facilities kept clean. Huge amount of space between pitches, really peaceful. All you can hear are the sounds of the wildlife around you. Too much greenery to explore in such a short visit of a couple of days. Wood available to have decent fires, BBQs permitted, facilities not too far of a walk from all pitches. Nigel, the owner, is fantastic, so accommodating and so friendly. Offered to fill up our water bottles for us each morning and checked in to see if we were okay and if there was anything at all we needed. Nigel came to check on us after it had rained to ensure our tents hadn't leaked, very much gives the impression that he is there to help if needed and would do what he can to support. 100% would recommend & 100% will be returning. Very sad to go home. Thank you Nigel for the most fantastic stay.

Quiet site, helpful host. Lovely to wake up to field of horses behind us each morning. Lots of space between each pitch. The kids loved roaming the field for buttercups and bug spotting. Easy to find and the loo was nice and clean.

This campsite is exactly what it claims to be - wild camping with exceptional views and great for some peace and quiet. lightly on a slope so you might find yourself sliding in your sleeping bag at night. Nigel, the host, couldn't have been better, offering water and fire wood. Me and all my friends who went have all said we would return!

Lovely views from upland site. Level and mowed pitch. Water delivered to my tent. Long, bumpy track to site hard going for my bike but doable. Mostly lovely but for the usual music plalyed by groups who don't appreciate how the drum beat carries across the whole site.
Site's response
We thank this client for the great review. Regarding the music, this was not coming from our site. After making several tours of the pitches, I established that my neighbours were holding a house party which was the source of the music and chatter noises. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do about that. Regards - Nigel, Manager

Wonderful location nestled in the north-western edge of the Shropshire hills, with the Stiperstones literally on the doorstep and multiple footpaths running through (& nearby) the site, so once you have arrived you don't need a vehicle to access miles upon miles of hilltop walks. Nigel placed us on an ideal pitch near the top of the hill, under a gorgeous oak tree and the views could not have been better.

Perfect place for people that want space for themselves, I can't recommend this place enough, fantastic and Nigel is a true gentleman that cannot do enough for you. Don't expect shiny toilet blocks and showers, just the corner of a field, perfect 🤩

Love staying here, and stayed twice now and will go back again- you just can't beat the scenery. This is a back-to-basic camp, which is what I like. Pitch up in a field with stunning views. Each pitch had a fire pit and BBQs are allowed, as well as dogs. Pitches are well spread out, so it's very peaceful even when there are other campers.

We only booked a couple of days before a very hot May Bank Holiday so were pleased to secure a pitch. Nigel sent a text on the day with directions, payment details and asking for an eta. I don't use texts and therefore didn't reply so keep an eye out! Nigel was very welcoming and showed us to the pitch. It was as far apart from others as promised, which was great. Space for a fire and we had a bread tray of good dried wood delivered for £10. This was plenty for 2 nights. Remember matches. If you leave your water carrier out in the morning it will be returned filled up, which was very handy. We walked from the campsite to Stiperstones and on round to Polesgate. 5 hours in total, although there are plenty of shorter or longer routes. Didn't make it to the pub in Habberley, but it's a 30 minute walk and there is a route over the fields if you don't fancy the road. All in all, a lovely campsite to get away from it all. Bring your supplies as there isn't anywhere to pop out to if you run out of tea bags. It's as promised a "nearly wild" campsite. Phone signal was actually pretty good even when walking. Enjoy!

Nigel is a very friendly and attentive host and we had everything we needed! The wood is reasonably priced and delivered to you, and water was just a short walk from our pitch, however there is a morning water delivery should you need it which is great. We had the pleasure of such stunning views thanks to Nigel's determination to get us up the hill when our campervan decided to play up! Not to forget the fun we had on the way back down! The stars at night are amazing! Our dog is very nervous around people and other dogs so this was a great place for us to take him as there is plenty of space between pitches. We took a lovely walk into the town, admiring the beautiful views, streams, cattle, sheep, wild birds and horses, a truly peaceful experience. We would highly recommend this place and will definitely be back to explore more of the land we didn't get to on our 2 night stay as there's sooo much of it!

A review as good as this one gives me a warm feeling and makes all the effort we put into providing a unique camping experience with a strong connection to nature and privacy between pitches very well worth it. Other clients have said it's like having your own secluded garden in stunning countryside for your stay. It was a pleasure to meet this couple and we shared a few good laughs. They left having gained new experiences which clearly enhanced their stay with us. I look forward to seeing them again. Nigel

We have just returned from a stay here. We loved the views, it was stunning. Nigel, the owner led us to our pitch, returned with fire wood (extra charge) and filled our water for us as it is a long walk back with it from the tap. Though we were also allowed to drive down to the tap when we needed to. The pitches are huge, which is one of the reasons we were happy to pay the price it is for limited facilities. This was clearly advertised and we knew what we were getting. When booking and I have double checked when we got home, it details "dogs are welcome though must be kept on lead". This was the main reason we booked here as we have a nervous dog who dislikes being approached by other dogs. We booked thinking that the large pitches and dogs on lead rule would mean that we could relax knowing our dog was relaxed and wouldn't be approached. On arrival, the owners own dog was roaming loose through the fields. The dog was lovely and I know he was roaming his own property, though it would have been good to have been aware of this. The dog did come up and though just sniffing around the tent, we had to put our dog inside and after this were on constant awareness. Another group in our field also had a dog off lead who did venture some distance on its own from its pitch, again we had to constantly be aware of this and move our dog frequently. Also, there was just one portaloo in our field. For 6 families (2 groups of 2 families and then 2 pitches on their own). This blocked frequently and each time we visited it we had to flush away other peoples waste. Thankfully we took our own toilet and could use this and so didn't personally bring this up, but be aware that the toilet facility was not enough for the guests staying. All in all, the views and peaceful location meant we enjoyed the stay, though the toilets and dogs not being on leads mean we would not return again.
