About Fernwood Glamping

This peaceful site is located just outside the traditional New Forest market town of Ringwood. Guests will be thrilled with the space for their children to play and enjoy watching the buzzards making lazy circles in the sky, seeing deer in the field and hearing the many birds in the trees - from woodpeckers in the day to owls at night. Spaced over 25 meters apart, the shepherd's hut and gypsy van are perfect for two and will also sleep two young children (up to age 10). The accommodation is some distance from the main house and looks out over the fields, well away from the crowds and with a much higher degree of privacy than on a regular campsite. Each unit has a small wood burner, which will have you toasty warm in a few minutes and keep you cosy even after you let it die down. A basket of wood is provided for you to use with the wood burner indoors. The shepherd's hut has a mini-fridge and kettle and a large picnic bench outside. The gypsy van uses a nearby thatched summer house (with tea/coffee making facilities) with decking overlooking the pond. Both the gypsy van and the shepherd's hut have their own compost toilet nearby (as well as use of a shared flush toilet and electric shower up near the house). You may want to enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine and a BBQ - perhaps even toasting a marshmallow or two on the fire pit or chiminea outside (pick up an extra basket for a small fee on site, which should last 1-2 evenings). Whilst there is an electric socket for charging devices, lighting is provided by fairy lights, tea lights, lanterns and a torch. Bedding and towels are provided for the double beds, with a sleeping bag with an integral pillow for younger guests. Please note, access to the gypsy van is via steep stairs with a climb required to get into the top double bed. A continental breakfast hamper can be ordered in advance as an optional extra, which includes cereals, warm bread rolls and muffins, jam, fresh fruit and yoghurt, milk and juice. This will be brought out to the hut/summer house in the morning. It is a memorable place to stay with children (best suited for ages 4-10 due to bed length). If you have younger children, please note there is a hot wood burner, high tree house and unfenced pond. The owners guarantee a friendly welcome and will do anything to make your stay more enjoyable. Sorry, no dogs. Fernwood Glamping has previously been selected for the addition of Bradts Slow Travel Guide for The New Forest.

The Shepherd's hut is available from March to December. The Gypsy van from 15th March to the end of September.

Facilities and amenities

Both glamping units have their own compost toilet nearby. Shared facilities include a shower room and a flush toilet near the main house.

The wooden tree platform makes a good deer hide. The summer house is used by the gypsy van guests and provides tea and coffee making facilities and a mini-fridge, a selection of games, and local guidebooks. There is a kettle and mini-fridge in the shepherd's hut.

Several local cafes in Ringwood serve coffee, breakfasts, or brunches. There are plenty of shops takeaways at the bottom of the hill, including a Tesco and a fish and chip shop, just a ten minute walk away.

A note from the site themselves...

Having lived in the New Forest nearly all our lives and bringing up our children in Ringwood, on the edge of the New Forest, we like sharing Fernwood with our guests as they enjoy exploring the area, relaxing by a fire pit in the evening and watching the deer in the field.

We have been running as Fernwood Glamping since 2016, and we have kept ourselves small with only two units to ensure that you can enjoy our garden away from the crowds. We are always happy to help with ideas of things to do and hear about your days out.

Gypsy Caravan - Gypsy CaravanAug 2024

We stayed in the gypsy wagon for our anniversary. We had a brilliant time, we cooked jacket potatoes on the fire and watched the bats of an evening. There were wild deer roaming and grazing. Wonderful experience. Just be aware the wagon moves, so if you get motion sickness, stay in the hut. We had breakfast delivered both mornings, which was absolutely delicious. Fantastic chip shop nearby and lots of little towns and villages dotted around. Wild horses, cows and donkeys roam around the New Forest. Wonderful experience. Would 100% recommend.

Site's response

I am so pleased you both enjoyed your stay at Fernwood for your anniversary weekend, Les. We are very lucky having some local takeaway options at the bottom of the hill, as our guests sometimes don't want to go back out again in the evening. The gypsy van has been built on a 1920/1930s dray base with some natural movement (a bit like having suspension on your bike!) so it is far better to stay in our shepherds hut if you have any difficulties with mobility, climbing stairs (no handrail) or vertigo. Thank you for writing us a wonderful review!

Shepherd's Hut - Shepherd's HutJun 2024

Rachel is a lovely host, the shepherd's hut is a wonderful retreat only 25 minutes from beautiful beaches. The garden setting is both spacious yet private. Highly recommend.

Site's response

Thank you very much for writing us a lovely review Gary. I enjoyed meeting both of you and pleased that you had such a good stay. We are very lucky being near both The New Forest and some beautiful beaches (Southbourne is my favourite too and it's great sitting at the top of Sobo's to watch the sunset or just people watch!). Hope to see you again soon, Rachel.

FAQ

Guests are welcome to bring their own disposable BBQs or use the fire pit provided outside your shepherd's hut/gypsy caravan. Inside each accommodation, you'll find a pack of marshmallows plus two toasting forks for your campfire, and fire wood is sold onsite for a small charge.

Check-in is from 5pm-10pm and you must vacate your chosen glamping accommodation by 10am on day of departure.

A bakery is located at the bottom of the hill here, serving takeaway pizzas every Friday and Saturday night, and you'll also find a fish and chip shop. The local London Tavern pub is only half a mile away, serving a delicious variety of food as well as hosting live music and pub quizzes for evening entertainment. The Alice Lisle pub is under two miles away with a spacious garden, including a kids play area, and ideally placed for New Forest walks, while the High Corner Inn enjoys a secluded location with outdoor seating for dining alfresco.

Sorry, dogs are not permitted onsite.

The site is just a minute from the A31 which takes you into Southampton or to Bournemouth and Poole (with popular sandy beaches and cinemas). From the centre of Ringwood (30 minutes walk) it's easy to access the main cities in the area by bus. Alternatively, buses leave every 20 minutes from the bottom of the hill.

The market town of Ringwood is on the edge of the New Forest and retains much of its original character. Every Wednesday the marketplace is blocked off for the traditional street market, and every evening it is buzzing with people, for meals out and drinks in the pub. During the daytime, there are plenty of small and unique shops to browse, and plenty of coffee shops too.

Ringwood is also on the Avon Valley Path, a 34-mile route across fields and footpaths across the forest and alongside the beautiful River Avon that takes you from Salisbury Cathedral to Christchurch Priory.

The Castleman trail also runs along an old railway track with sections open near Burley and again from Ringwood, through Moors Valley Country Park and on to Poole.

There are lots of family friendly attractions and things to do nearby including:

  • Owl Raptor and Reptile Centre (5 minutes)
  • Blashford Lakes Wildlife Reserve (10 minutes)
  • Avon Heath Country Park (10 minutes)
  • The New Forest Water Park (10 minutes)
  • Go Ape Moors Valley (15 minutes)
