About Miller's Huts Dorset

This charming glamping space invites you to stay in an idyllic setting, just a mile south of Shaftesbury. The mill belongs to a family that has been milling for five generations and is itself an ancient site - so old it received a mention in the Domesday Book. The site is home to a stoneground flour mill, the gentle waters of a millpond and plenty of relaxing beauty - the perfect place to escape it all and get away with your other half. If you're a nature lover, you'll be keen to spot the elusive kingfisher that skims over the water. Enjoy this beautiful spot from a tempting shepherd's hut, furnished with all the bits and bobs you'll need - from crockery to wine glasses. Outside you can settle down around the fire and watch the sun go down on another lovely day. You'll also love John's Hut, which offers a spacious interior and comfy furnishings. It has a small double bed with lovely bedding, toasty salamander stove to keep you warm and all kinds of lovely touches - such as a blue Hungarian dresser. It's the perfect place to enjoy life's simple pleasures. There is a quirky field kitchen in an old tin shed, near the huts, equipped with a small fridge, gas stove, crockery, utensils etc. A couple of minutes away, situated off the mill yard is a bright, clean washroom with flushing loo and hot water. You can book both huts or just one ~ only one booking is allowed on site at any one time giving privacy and sole use of facilities. This site is more suitable for older children as it is located close to water.

Open from 1 May to 31 October

A note from the site themselves...

My husband is a fifth generation flour miller, the family started milling in Watchet, Somerset in 1832 before moving to Bristol and in 1947 my father-in-law started out on his own here at Cann Mills. The mill produces nine types of organic stoneground flour using traditional French Burr millstones which are primarily driven by a waterwheel.

The two huts are characterful and reflect a passion for all things rustic and beautiful. Miller's is an original shepherds hut whilst John's, based on a living van, was created by a local blacksmith who selected and cut, shaped and finished the wood, using his own sawmill, to closely match the original profiles of the 19th century.

To spend an evening in a traditional old Shepherd's Hut enjoying the millpond views is a relaxing almost magical experience.

Shaftesbury's Gold Hill, made an absolute icon by its inclusion in the famous Hovis ad of a few decades ago, is just a 5 minute drive away (or 30 minutes on foot) and is a great place to soak up the nostalgia and beauty of the area. It has independent shops, pubs and restaurants, there's even a small Lido for a morning swim.

From there, why not take in ancient Shaftesbury Abbey and explore the tranquil setting of Shute House Garden.

Stretching out from the back of the glamping space, breathtaking walks start in the direction of Fontmell Down. This is a chance to walk the beauty of true Dorset surroundings where you'll find meandering lanes, historic houses and pretty views. The site is also close to the Wessex Ridgeway which has a 'Shaftesbury Loop' (15.8km) that meanders through the lush Nadder Valley.

National Trust properties, Kingston Lacey and Stourhead are close and worth a visit. Sherborne and Sherborne Castle, the romantic Wardour Castle and the chocolate-box village of Milton Abbas.

Local golf, coarse and trout fishing with sea fishing a little further from Poole Harbour are available.
