About Hidden Retreat Glamping

Located in a conservation area on the banks of the River Derwent, Hidden Retreat Glamping is situated in the village of Shotley Bridge, approximately three miles from the town of Consett in County Durham. As the name would suggest, Hidden Retreat is very private and tucked away amongst the trees in Shotley Grove. Being a conservation area, the wildlife is protected and disturbed as little as possible by attaching bat and bird boxes to the trees to encourage nesting. Low lighting is used wherever possible. The site is approx. one and a half acres with two luxury pods, The Annandale and The Oley. The Annandale has a side entrance, and the Oley has an end entrance with a porch area. Each pod has an entirely different style and décor. Each pod is well equipped, and both have a bathroom with shower, toilet and handbasin, double bedroom, kitchen area and lounge with sofa bed which sleeps 2. They are well equipped with everything you could need, including Satellite TV and WiFi. There is a patio area with outdoor furniture, BBQ and fire pit to enjoy dining al-fresco. There is a car park provided, and each pod comprises of the lounge (with sofa bed to sleep 2), a bedroom with a double bed, a kitchen area and a bathroom with shower, toilet and handbasin. There is a covered hot tub area on the patio outside with outdoor furniture, BBQ, and a firepit.

A note from the site themselves...

I have lived at Shotley Grove for over 25 years and could not imagine living anywhere else as it is so beautiful and peaceful. I converted the outbuildings in 2003 into a bungalow, which I have rented out as a holiday cottage ever since and is very popular with a lovely view of the river from the lounge window.

It does really well, but the paddock beside the property had become neglected and overgrown. My daughter Laura, who is a big fan of glamping, suggested that we could utilise this land for glamping pods and we could run the site together, alongside the Holiday Cottage. So, after a great deal of research etc, we submitted our plans to the Council and they were passed by the end of May 2021.

We pride ourselves in providing a luxurious experience, with style and comfort in mind, whilst still embracing the great outdoors. We have made sure you have everything you need from cooking utensils to bath robes and toiletries.

Imagine waking up to the sound of the river Derwent as it meanders by and looks absolutely stunning. In fact, you are surrounded by an oasis of natural beauty which is hard to beat anywhere else in the country. We are regularly visited by a family of 3 deer, and other wildlife such as rabbits. squirrels and wide range of birds.
