About Purple Badger Camping and Fishing Lakes

This site offers guests a variety of ways to stay, catering for those who favour traditional tent camping as well as glampers seeking out a luxury break in a handcrafted shepherd's hut or pre-pitched bell tent. If you simply would like to camp with all your own equipment, non electric tent pitches are mowed 10m wide and bordered by wildflowers and long grass. The camping field is car free so children can roam and explore and, as there are only 7 pitches (all 6m apart), you can relax and unwind in plenty of space. All have a space for a log fire too. Wheelbarrows are also provided to help move your camping gear, just 100m to the furthest pitch. The camping field can also be made available to hire for your exclusive use, including private use of facilities. Or leave the tent behind and choose a stay in one of three beautifully handcrafted shepherd's huts sitting amongst the trees and located on the edge of the top lake. All huts have wonderfully snug interiors including a double bed, perfectly formed kitchen, wood burner and their own private bathrooms with electric shower and waterless toilets. They also include the fishing pegs that are just in front and to the side of each hut, great for a glass of wine or ideal to catch that carp. You'll also find ready pitched bell tents in the camping field. Millie the bell tent is furnished, sleeping up to five, with a standard double bed and camp beds for additional guests. It has a cute outside mini shed/storage unit which holds all you need for your stay away, including a gas stove, plates, glasses, pots and pans! Val, the second bell tent, is also ready pitched for you but unfurnished so you can bring your own camping kit to set up your home from home. Both bell tents have outside chairs, a bench and fire pits ready for stargazing and marshmallow toasting with your loved ones!

Shepherd's huts are open all year except January. Camping and the bell tents are available from 31st March to 30th October.

Facilities and amenities

The camping fields include two showers and a sink area in a converted horse box, plus two flushing toilets with hand sinks in each. The Old Chicken Shed houses two washing up sinks, a fridge, freezer and electricity points.

There is also a toilet and hot shower near the top carp lake for night anglers. The shepherd's huts have their own showers, toilets and kitchens. Bell tents have access to shared facilities.

The site also has its own coffee cart open at weekends in low season and all week in the summer months 8am - 1pm. Plus a wood fired pizza oven is open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings serving traditional wood fired pizzas. There is also the Badgers Den in the camping field - an up-cycled wooden shelter great for socialising in all weathers.

Within ten minutes is a local Co-op and there is a wider range of supermarkets and restaurants just 15 minutes away. The Dog and Gun pub is a five minute drive away at Keyham.

A note from the site themselves...

Welcome to our site, we are Mark and Helen. We are a family of six our kids Millie, Val, Jude and Logan. Our backgrounds are both in retail and service, and we really enjoyed the process of our business, along with all the trials and tribulations that come with it.

We spent many years exploring France and Cornwall in our lovely little van, Bella. Whilst we travelled, we spent time dreaming of our own little site where we could recreate all the amazing experiences we have enjoyed over the years.

Now, we have the joy of sharing our own little piece of paradise with guests and hope we have the chance to welcome you soon!

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass Tent PitchesSep 2024

The site is very orderly and pretty, even if you don't want to use them, the fishing lakes by the campsite are pretty and a great spot for an evening chat. The toilets were always clean and sanitary, they were nice toilets as well, not port-a-loos as there were sinks for washing up. There was a little spot to buy coffee in the mornings and restaurant-quality pizza was available on Saturday evenings. The owners were incredibly nice, they lent us a sleeping bag free of charge when we realised we'd forgotten one, they helped us start a campfire and were friendly all-around. One of my friends (who camps quite often), said it was the best site they'd been to.

Shepherd's Hut - Shepherd's HutsApr 2024

Stayed for 2 nights with my son while visiting an event at Donington Park Circuit. The hut was comfortable and the wood burning stove was a great asset on a cold April night! The setting and wildlife are fantastic, and the pizzas are really good too. We'll look to stay here again in the future.
