Little Oak Camping is a tranquil and secluded campsite on the edge of the market town of Retford in North Nottinghamshire. The site is surrounded by beautiful countryside and less than five minutes into the centre of town. In addition to camping, the site offers a fabulous handcrafted and super-comfortable shepherd's hut. Campfires are also permitted in the onsite firepits and dogs are very welcome!

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass PitchesOct 2024

Fantastic site, hidden away in the back garden. Large field surrounded with trees making it very quiet and peaceful. I was able to park anywhere I wanted, which gave me the freedom of being alone or near others. Nobody bothered me but I noticed the owner walked around every morning to make sure everyone was okay. The shower/toilet block could do with freshening up but the shower was lovely and warm. Being a female camping alone I felt very secure and safe. The site is very dark as there is no lights at all anywhere, maybe some sensor lights leading to the toilet block would've been nice. The fire pits that are dotted around the site are a nice touch for anyone wanting to use them too. Overall, very pleased with the site and I hope to be back again soon.

I recently visited here with my husband and our 3 pugs. It's such a nice, quiet campsite, in a beautiful location. We had a lovely, peaceful time and will definitely come back!

Mostly good!

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesAug 2024

Had a great time, but maybe some regulation as to when to quieten down in the evening would be a good idea. A large group turned up late on the Friday evening, 3 mums and a bunch of kids and basically didn't care about other parents trying to get their kids to sleep. Kids screaming, adults all being loud over dinner, car doors slamming, inflating air beds at 10pm, that kind of thing. Seems louder than normal when trying to sleep in a tent. The noise then went on much later, so our kids were all shattered the day after, which is not fun. If the campsite had some signs up or some guidelines upon arrival, then maybe would have helped.

Site's response

Daniel I am so sorry that you were disturbed by noise. We ask everyone to quieten down by 11 on the information we send and its in our site rules. When large groups book, we make sure they know this is a family site and ask them not to book if they are going to be rowdy. In this instance they all made separate booking so we weren't able to head them off at the pass, so to speak. My husband would have been round at least once during the evening and again at 11 to ask them to quieten down. It's a difficult line to navigate, people accuse us of being the fun police just as as well as telling us it was too noisy. We have neighbours who don't want to be disturbed as well so we generally err on the side of quiet, but we don't always get it right and I am sorry if we didn't on this occasion.

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass Pitches (Annexe Field)Aug 2024

Friendly owners, lovely annexe field. Great location for walking into Retford on the byway. Only downsides was that the portaloos had no loo roll all weekend and were very smelly. Two small showers and two small loos, adequate but not very spacious when you have to go in with a small child.

Site's response

I am so sorry to hear that you had problems with the portable toilets. I will speak to the staff involved. We deliberately keep the numbers of people on the site small so that there are enough loos to go round, which is why the site feels so spacious, so I am really sorry that the toilets were not useable on the Annexe and will make sure this doesn't happen again.

Easy to find with the directions from the website. The annex field was well maintained and the portable toilets were spotless.

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass Pitches (Annexe Field)Aug 2023

Great place, we stayed in a large tent within the annexe area. Good for dogs (in the annex area) seemed like the other area was a dog free zone, but don't quote me. 2 portaloos in the annexe area, BUT, access to 2 proper WCs and 2 showers. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, relaxed atmosphere & chilled. 30 mins by car or so from Sherwood Forest. The hosts were accommodating and helpful/present. Fully recommend.

Enjoyable short break away

A lovely campsite, quiet and hidden in the countryside. Perfect for relaxing and star gazing. Great location- small drive from the town centre and great attractions like Sherwood Forest. The owners were friendly and accommodating. Fire pits are dotted around the campsite and you can buy enough wood for a night's fire from the owners. Perfect for us.

Lovely little site

We had a lovely short stay at this campsite. There's a relaxed feeling on the site and the owners are very friendly and helpful. The facilities were clean and tidy. We would definitely stay again. The barrow of wood for a fire and complimentary marshmallows was a real hit with the kids.

A lovely holiday near Sherwood

Small Tent - Non Electric Grass PitchesApr 2023

It's a very good campsite, tucked away not far from a residential street and main road but still managing to feel wild. The dawn chorus was incredible. The facilities are fine, but a little rough around the edges - perhaps I've been spoiled but some of the campsites I've been to in North Wales and Cornwall have had better facilities in spite of being wilder. Still, it's a lovely getaway, within walking distance of town and the hosts are kind and helpful. We'd come again.

Pro's: Overall, a good weekend's camping. Just family tents and children playing outdoors with their parents, and teenagers quietly enjoying each other's company. No rowdiness and everyone fast asleep by 11pm! The toilets and showers were basic, but clean and the hot water system outside was pure genius! The pitches were as big as you wanted them to be and the fire pits dotted around the site were a nice touch. There was plenty of room for everybody without encroachment and the hosts were a delight to deal with. Best thing was: no caravanners! No massive awnings and windbreaks, and no satellite dishes. Con's: Find me one!

Just awesome! Super clean, very friendly. The wood was really convenient. The campsite is tucked away, if you weren't looking for it, you wouldn't see it, which makes it perfect for some peace, quiet and solitude.
